--anal gland emptying and possible episioplasy....and a QUESTION!!!.

Sophie was scooting, so I was doing lots and lots of reading before taking her to the vet.......turned out the glands were just

full, not impacted....thank goodness!!  O--kayyyyy, now I have witnessed an extraction and WHOA.....after I saw all that

liquid expelled, I felt so bad for my sweet girl....we were sad that it must've been hurting.....I want them both to

have more FIBER now, so the vet suggested brown rice......I cooked up a bunch and added it to their food

yesterday---they gobbled it up----yipppeee!!!

The doc also mentioned her vulva has excess skin around it, and might cause yeast issues, UTI's, etc....then he

mentioned a *possible*  episioplasty.... .well, she's

only ten months, and no s/s of UTI's or yeast infections---YET!   I clean (and DRY!!!) her regularly, but not every day.

I obviously would prefer she NOT have a major surgery like that!!!

I  wanted to ask y'all, do you:

1) clean *both* of your girls' parts every day?  or after every stool?

(I use a plain, unscented baby wipe and then dry with a paper towel )

We all know l that OVERcleaning isn't a   a good thing, either since that would interfere with her regular flora/

not letting her body do what it needs to do

2) I keep hearing about Gold Bond Powder....wouldn't it kinda BURN that area?

And, since someone might ask---I also clean under her tight tail very often----thank goodness, hers is external ,VERY easy to clean and

she shows no signs of discomfort....

Poor Meaty has a deep pocket that needs major cleaning.....I wear a glove and have to go pretty deep around the pocket several

times.......I'm sure it feels refreshing to him, but there are times it's seems as though it hurts him......poor guy!!!  I've of course

read about tail pocket removals here, and I hope Meaty never gets to that point...

awwww, our sweet babies!!!!!!!!   :-)

I think that is pretty common on these guys.

I would not have the excess skin removed. If she had a history of UTI's or yeast infectino I would suggest cleaning differently or more/less frequently, but I would not do the surgery. But that is only me! May be that other bully owners with more exoerience in this area will have a different answer.

My vet recommended that I use

My vet recommended that I use a baby wipe to clean my little girl, every time she urinates.   She gets red and sore - vaginitis.   The biggest problem is when she decides to just pee her bed and lay in it!

Gracie anal issues

I just had Gracie's anal gland extracted for the first time too.....yuck.  She was constantly scooting on the floor and I couldn't believe how much stuff came out!  I also have to wash her tail area almost everyday.  She has a tight tail pocket and I really get up there and wash away!  She loves it.  I think it feels good for her to be cleaned.  I only have to say "lets go to the tub"  and she runs right to the tub!!  Its too cute! I haven't any girl issues with her yet so hopefully that will not become an issue.  It's always something with our little angels!!

Anal Glands, you only need to see once. . .

and you are GLAD to let the Vet or Groomer do this job.

We dont 'wipe down' Gizmo daily, and she doesnt seem to have a problem, but we do take a warm washcloth to her inbetween her baths, and concentrate on her belly and below ;)

Surgery - not unless its absolutely necessary - Gizmo's Tailpocket was extremely deep (3 knuckles worth) and our Vet suggested the surgery, due to her extreme case, and he didnt want to originally do the surgery (he's getting older) he wanted us to go to a surgery center ($$$$$) but after the 3rd trip to him w/ tail problems, he took the case and was about 1/3 the price of the surgery center.
