Amount of Protein in Food

Just wondering what brand name of foods other Bully owners are currently feeding their dogs? Also I've heard from various sources since we got our Bulldog who is now 4 months old that we should feed him foods with 20% - 22% protein. I currently have in the Canidae Lamb and Rice (21% Protein), but I am considering switching him to Acana Lamb and Apple which is 27% protein.

Please share you thoughts with me.

Thanks!

I like to stay at 25 % protein or less.

I feed Blue Buffalo Basics, Salmon and potato. Grain free and doing well.

Yeah, 25% or less here too...

Taste of the Wild salmon is about that and their lamb is also.  For some reason, chicken is higher.

May I ask why you want to

May I ask why you want to change foods? Canidae is a good quality food.

Ever since we've started him

Ever since we've started him on it he's had tear stains, and I wanted to try something with a different grain to see if that helps before I go grain free which is even more expensive. He also has a pimple problem on his chin, and still with cleaning and applying Polysporin it wasn't going and way and seemed to get more irritated after he ate. Also not that it's a major reason, but the Canidae smells, and in turn makes him smell. Another reason is being from Canada, and being a homer like I am I wanted to look at some food made in Canada. I am trying him now on the Acana Lamb and Apples. I know the protein is higher (27%) than the Canidae (21%) but he is also a fairly active Bulldogs walking 1-2 times a day for 30 mins each and he usually gets in an hour or more at the dog park a day. The pet store I go to have a 2 year bulldog who is on Orijen and it has a 40% protein and they say he's never been healthier, so I think it really depends on the dog.

I just started transistioning him yesterday, I will keep you informed if anyone is interested.

Tap.I have read other posts

Tap.

I have read other posts that tap water was the cause of tear stains in some other bulldogs, but I've heard from numerous people that where I live about 40 mins East of Vancouver British Columbia, Canada that we one some of the best tap water in North America....So I'm on the fence with the water.

Just wondering. my

Just wondering. my father-in-law is from Canada. He's 90 years old and still plays golf and tennis. Something must be good in the water up there! :)

I, personally, am not a big proponent of changing foods when something out of the ordinary shows up on your beloved bully. I think too many people jump the gun on this issue and blame the food. Again, this is MY opinion. I am not saying that there aren't cases out there where food IS the cause of the problem, but I don't think it's that widespread. Good Luck!

Tear Stains

I too am 40min from Vancouver and have always used tap water, I have thought of going bottled but haven't. His tear stains started at 18months (thought it may be hormones), he is 2 1/2yrs now. We switched to raw about 8months ago hoping his tear stains would clear up but they haven't. He was also staying to thin on just raw itself. I starting him a month ago on  kibble in the morning Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream at 25%protein, and raw in the evenings. He has put back on just the right amount of weight and the combination of raw and kibble has helped stop his eyes from running a bit but the stains are still there. It seems his eyes run on just kibble and they run on just raw, the combo of the two seems to help. Being a white faced bully doesn't help. My thought may be to put him on Tylan for 3weeks and increase his probiotic in his raw a bit and this may change his PH, but will see when not on the Tylan if it just goes back to tear stains again. It is always a trial as each dog is different.

I respect your opinion and I

I respect your opinion and I did a lot research on foods before I brought our puppy home. Our breeder highly recommended Lamb and Rice food, he feeds all his bulldogs Kirkland Lamb and Rice, but I don't have the space for a 50 lbs bag and Costco isn't an easy stop for me to pick up food. Part of me thought if he has a mild allergy to grains that barley (canidae) was more likely the culprit than oats (acana).

Kirkland is made by Diamond

If you've done your research you would know what they have done to animals. Stay away from Diamond products. JMO. Acana also has three different grain free bags. Costco isn't a fun place to shop either yikes I'd rather support the local holistic store.

I feed Orijen and its 40%

Lola loves the food and I will admit her Zoomies are more frequent because its higher calorie but its great quality. She loves it and it really depends on the dog and lifestyle..

Acana

Acana is a great line they are made by Champion in their own facility.  They do not denature their meats and do not use EQ in their fish like other dog food places do.

"All meats that are not to be used for “human consumption” but are to be sold after slaughter are to be denatured as per government regulations to prevent them from being rerouted and used for human consumption. The denatured carcasses and other waste can then be transported to the rendering facility. This is done by adding sufficient quantities of dye, charcoal, malodorous fish oil, acid, sodium pentobarbital (poison used to euthanize pets) fuel oil, kerosene, crude carbolic acid (phenol, a potentially corrosive disinfectant), creosote (used to preserve wood or as a disinfectant) and citronella (an insect repellent made from lemon grass) are the approved denaturing materials approved in both Canada and United States. "

My dogs are eating Acana Wild Prairie Harvest and getting bottled RO water out of 5 gallon jugs with this sweet pump.  It only costs $1.75 a week to fill the big jug at the grocery store.  I am remaining confident that the tear stains will be resolved soon, his excessive tearing has already subsided.  I could go on but I will stop here for sanity sake :)

Orijen and Acana

We are going to start raw on Saturday but we are currently feeding Orijen Regional Red and Acana Pacifica.  We have had no problems with either food and I think they are great foods.  The protein is high but we have not had any problems.  We have never had tear stains but we also give them Brita filtered water so I don't know if that is why.  But Orijen and Acana are great foods.

Cooper loves Orijen. :)

He will be 2 in March and is very Picky!!!! I know the protein is high but it is the only kibble he will eat without adding something... His other food just sat in the bowl but he will eat this and seems to love it..
