alternatives to aspirin?

I posted earlier about how Reuben, 12.5 yrs old, is starting to have problems walking, he would look "drunk" kinda as he stumbles, would sometimes fall over at the back end.....Ok, so after the vet said to try Aspirin for Reuben for 7 days, to see if it's inflammtion maybe, well the aspirin worked like magic! He was back to normal within a couple days it seems..... however, that 7 days is over and been only two days since and already getting back to what he was like.... and I know aspirin is hard on stomachs etc, and not good to give daily, so my question is...

is there any safe alternatives that do the same as Aspirin for dogs?

He is on Glucosamine, Chrondroitin and MSM pills every day, they help but not as effective... what I did read up on and find is this....

"One of the reasons veterinarians no longer recommend aspirin for dogs is because newer pain relieving medications that have less side effects, and are more targeted, are available. Of course, another big reason is that aspirin, in the dosage needed to relieve pain, actually destroys cartilage. This is obviously extremely undesirable in diseases like arthritis where cartilage is destroyed anyway. One of the most popular NSAID's prescribed by vets for arthritis is Rimadyl (carprofen). It generally doesn't upset a dog's stomach, and provides good releif from pain. It also seems to slow down the progression of arthritis, and importantly, does not damage cartilage. Dogs on carprofen need to have their liver function monitored. It is given twice a day. Other veterinary prescribed NSAID's include Etogesic (etodolac), Deramaxx (deracoxib), Metacam (meloxicam), Zubrin (tepoxalin), and Previcox (firocoxib). There is also a medication available that falls into the category of a chrondoprotectorant. Chrondoprotectorants help prevent further destruction of cartilage. Called Adequan, this medication is quite effective at relieving pain as well. Adequan helps cartilage repair itself, stimulates the production of healthy joint fluid, and blocks the effect of enzymes that contribute to inflammation. It is given by injection twice a week for four weeks, and is most effective in the early stages of arthritis.

So.. anyone know what works well besides Aspirin? My Vet did say Metacam, I may try that see if helps

My old Doberman girl is on Novox very successfully.

She gets 100 mg 2 times daily. It was once daily, but she got hurt and I increased it to twice a day. She has had no side effects and has been on it for months. It helps her out tremendously.

Adequan is also extrememly good, Jacinda has used it in the past that I know of, and I know horses respond to it extrememly well also. It is very expesive though. There is a generic of Adequan that my vet mentioned to me, but I can't remember what it was. You may inquire into that.

called my vet, he said that

called my vet, he said that if tolerated the aspirin ok and it worked, then stay on it as needed. He said some dogs can handle it long term (stomachs) where as others can't. He was on a 325mg pill cut into halves 3 x daily, so 1.5 aspirin a day. And I bought the Stomach Guard buffered type. But... he said any signs of vomitting, stool etc, stop taking it. He did recommend Metacam, safer, but the price is insane.

What I may do is just give one aspirin a day, (325mg cut into halves morning and night) and see how it goes.

Aspirin....

I have a senior, too, 13, and she is getting aspirin most days and doing well with it. I have tried Deramaxx and Rymidal, but the aspirin seems to give better result, and she's tolerating it well.  It depends on the individual.  Good luck!

just saw your remark about metacam price

shop over line...you can find it cheaper than the vets office...i also find that once their one it...i can go three days before another dose...it seems to stay in the system a little longer....aspirn can just casue to many problems...as its hard to bounce back at that age....

thanks micki, btw how much

thanks micki, btw how much are you giving your dog???

I'm giving one 325 mg. Bufferin daily...

I hadn't thought to split the tablet, but think I will try that as it makes sense to keep a steady amount in her system and maybe the smaller amount at a time would be less likely to irritate the stomach.  Thanks.

Side effects....

Every medication, precription and over the counter,  has possible side effects, and each Bulldog is a unique individual that may be affected differently.  You have to watch regardless of which medication you choose.  Hopefully whichever you give helps and is tolerated well.  Good luck!

Judy and those who use

Judy and those who use Metacam... how long does a bottle last you? I know it comes in 10,32,100ml size bottles... what size do you buy and how long does it last for lets say an average size (50lb) bulldog?

Reuben is 45lbs, how much would he need a day and how long a bottle last?

I tried reading this info online, but the dosage and measuring etc seems really difficult to understand without having the bottle, as I guess it comes measured by a syringe or something?

I just want an rough estimate to give me an idea... and yes buying online looks cheaper but most the sites are for US and not Canada, and Canada says prescription needed ???
