Alright-- james eye, part 12

So, we went back and the eye is no better.  No worse, but no better.  We switched meds to Ciprofloxacin and Adequan/ saline rotation.  Heres my question-- I dont have him in the cone because I have not witnessed any pawing, rubbing, etc.  Should I put the cone on to help with the healing.  We are going into week 4 here....

oops-- background info

James had an ulcer, probably caused by sand then by rubbing it in his ye.  It is located between the 5 and 7 oclock (bottom).  Eyelashes and lids look fine structurally, it just wont heal....originally the DR had us on betadine and Gentamicin but after 2 weeks no resposne, we switched.  This all happened 6/2/11...is this typical to take so long, and again, am i screwing up the healing process by not using the cone?

He could be

Rubbing at night or when you aren't watching him.  I still don't understand the treatment.  Adequan?  Really??  Is the Adequan going in the eye?  Do you do any google searches on the treatment method the vet is prescribing?  I personally would find another vet or opthamologist.  I did a little research and even though Adequan is an injectable for arthritis and joints I guess it can be useds as a healing agent in eyes.

I have always had a vet prescribe the Neo Poly Bac Ointment or drops (without he cortisone, which is Neo Poly Dex) and it has always worked on numerous eye ulcers in the past 15 years that I have had bulldogs. Interesting because now I wonder if you can't get this because only the Dex is coming up online and I remember my vet saying something about it being discontinued.

I asked about the Poly..

he was just sort of vague and prescribed this treatment. i am so exhausted of googling, but i will...i just dont know if im paranoid or if he is not a trustworthy vet. he and his dad are vets to the entire bulldog community out here so i felt i was in good hands...i'm goiing to give it a week and see. i was not using the cone, so now that i am, combined with the new treatment, hopefully it will work. is it unusual for 2 weeks to go by w/ no progress? everything i have read said these can take a while to heal...

Depends on the severity

of the ulcer and no it can take time. The last ulcer we had was with MacKenzie and it easily took 4 weeks to heal.  He went back weekly twice for restaining, she debrided once and I continued the eye ointment for an additional 2 weeks beyond the 3 weeks she recommended just to be safe.  I caught his early and we saw immediate healing progress the first week.

My concern is the lack of healing in the first 4 weeks.

You can take the cone off whenever you are right there with him and like Celine said when eating and snuggling. But if you can't watch him then he needs the cone on.

Good Luck!

I know a couple of people with bulldogs in Hawaii, but one is on Maui and not sure about the other...but I can check.

please do!

i have one reference, and of course the vet for our mutt (who is soooo low maintence compared to a bullie) if they give you a name on oahu, will you  pass it along?  also, it has been 2 weeks, the injury happened on 6/2.  so if it is not better next visit (one week) i am going to get a second opinion.  thanks so much for your help..
