ace and postsurgery death

?s on post surgical death and Ace

Lost my bully last week after surgery...she was fine after surgery up and about they kept her overnite just to monitor her and was suppose to pick her up next day in the afternoon..they called midafternoon to tell me she has passed away. Surgeon found vomit in here throat said no one of knowing what came first that or cardiac arrest...I don't understand this is almost 24 hours after surgery I just can't understand why a healthy and I did all preliminary blood work on her everything fine would suddenly have cardiac arrest.  Surgeon has said possible lingering effect of anethesia that attacked her heart but isn't sure said I would never know what happened.  Now that this has happened in looking for answers found this board and warnings pertaining to the use of Ace which in her case was used as a sedative in addition to Isoflurane for general anethesia.  I have been unable to find any research other than a VIM report warning of dangers in boxers Does anyone here have any infor pertaining to this?  Not looking to blame but want to talk to my vet about this as I do not want this to happen to anyone else .

consider having a necropsy done on her,

but by a different Vet, or if you have a Vet school local.

It may provide you with some answers, maybe not. But every time I have lost a dog unexpectedly and haven't had a necropsy done, I have regretted the lost opportunity to know.

so sorry for your loss

I should have said that in my initial post. I'm bad.

Sometimes there are no answers

perfectly healthy humans die from surgery in the best hospitals with the best surgeons.

Sorry about your girl, I know it's so heartbreaking.

update

Called vet hospital to find out exactly what meds Zoey was given day of surgery and the following day.  I was incorrect in stating that she had been given Ace as a sedative prior to surgery she was not- They gave it to her the following day at 8 am(1/2 tablet 25mg) and is something they generally use when eye surgery has been preformed(Zoey had knee and eyes done).  She had her problem at 2 ish (6 hours later).  I have spent the last week researching this  and really have found very little in research to back this up- yes there are documented cases with hpersensitivity in boxers and numerous references from vet journals in which some refer to only boxers and others have voiced concerns in using this sedative with all Brachycephalic breeds- I  have called a handful of "Bulldog Vets"  and asked if they use Ace and its split either no we don't, yes we do but extreme caution must be used or yes we use it and have never had problems- I have called my Alma mater who has a well know Vet School and talked to an anesthesiologist who of course is aware of the "isolated cases with Boxers" but said they use it not only on Bulldogs but also on Boxers if the case merits it and when I asked why not use alternative sedative if there is even a remote possibility of a problem with this drug - All sedatives can have side effects and the advantages of Ace are that it does not sedate as heavily as some of the others . They have not had problems with this drug . I was also told that if she had had a reaction to that tablet more than likely it would have been seen within the first hour.

End of the day no research to back this up- its very subjective no definitive answers on this.  I have driven myself crazy trying to determine what happened-  She was at a great vet hospital , her surgeons were very knowlegeable and also experienced with this breed - they urged caution in trying to resolve her problems with medication (eyes) and bed rest(knee) but after two months of this and really no significant improvement we decided to go ahead with surgery.  I can not think of anything that could have been done differently. Sometimes it just happens......From this experience two things I will take away from this- 1-  should have had necropsy done but was blindsided by the outcome of this and totally unprepared for this and 2- once i get past this I will get another Bulldog- I adore them- and next time around even though I have no solid research to back this up- The surgeon will have to give me a very solid case as to why he would use Ace in a surgery/sedative on my dog- this may have had nothing to do with her death or maybe it did- but not willing to chance it next time.

Peace

sadly this happens alot in

bulldogs...i know a person who did a tail surgery and three hours latter her bull died...cardiac arrest...from the drugs? from a unknown problem? surgery is a risky thing....in this breed....it does sound more like cardiac arrest...and i assume before they pulled the tube she was breathing on her own? the vet i go to is very expensive...they charge twice what other vets do....but a tech is assigned to every two dogs after surgery for the day....so i feel if a problem does arise a person is right their...

i am sorry for your loss...and i know its made harder becasue you dont have a reason....but i am very very sorry.....

Having lost
