Took Lady to the vet today for her 45 day checkup since the insemination. She has gained 5 pounds since the AI and has gotten alot rounder and her belly has gotten lower. Dr. Drake tried to feel for pups but said its a little too early, and Lady gets really excited at the vet an doesn't sit still. Just wiggles and kicks her legs back like a bull and dances a bit. Going back in 10 days to do an X-ray and see her progression. Just wanted to post an update and figured I should post here rather than in the Gen Forum. Thanks for lookin.
Leaving the vet, someone thought she could ride on the console.....she was mad when I made her get in the back seat.
She wanted to go through the drive thru ! :)
Good luck :):) keep us posted :)
Last steps taken May 26, 2014 -- Been rolling along ever since . . . .
Ultrasound
Just have an ultrasound done. But keep in mind that what you hear and see isn't always the number that you get.
Wish I could
I wish I could but unfortunately my vet doesn't have an ultrasound. As long as mama is healthy I'm being patient. I'm amazed that she's acting exactly how she always has, just cuddles and sleeps more often.
Check with a human ultrasound office...
befriend a tech :) Sometimes you will find someone that would be more then willing to ultrasound a dog, especially if they are a dog lover. It is a learning experience and some will find it a neat thing to do. Worth making a few phone calls at least.
I wouldn't do xrays....I think its a waste of time and money. You will know if she is pregnant and if you did progestrone testing and AI then should know what day for the C-Section. Neither xray or ultrasound can give you the exact number of puppies.
The only thing Ester did different was she would be herself back to bed (in my bed) which she had never done before. And she started trying to nest outside in the shrubs, leaves, etc, where a rabbit actually had a home.
ooh i have a feeling she's
ooh i have a feeling she's pregnant!!! lol
hope all goes well...she is adorable!!!
smoochies the scrunchy face
The pregnancy needs to be confirmed
Before her due date.
If you know your dog
you know if they are pregnant or not. So I don't think you have to have an ultrasound or an xray all the time. Never did on Ester. I could easily feel the little buggers. If there is a ? then definitely yes.
I'm sure a large litter is very obvious
But, with only 1 or 2 puppies and the possibility of a false pregnancy, I would want a definite confirmation of pregnancy. I watched my rescue girl go throught a false pregnancy and I would have thought her pregnant if I hadn't known without a doubt that she wasn't. She had milk but no real weight gain.
Yes .. I will agree with that Jacinda
But there are instances where an ultrasound and an xray have shown no puppies and infact the bitch was pregnant. So you should always keep in mind that these tests are not always 100 percent.
48 days now
Since seeing the vet on Monday, Lady has gotten a little more lazy and a little more stubborn. Her nipples have enlarged somewhat and are sagging more. Her belly is firmer and obviously increasing in size a small bit. She is constantly laying on her back, which she hardly ever did before her AI.
As for the comments about not needing an ultrasound or an x-ray, I am almost 100% positive she's pregnant but I would like to do an ultrasound or x-ray to determine what size of litter she is going to have and for the health of Lady. Better safe than sorry i guess, I just want everything to go smoothly and mama an the pup/puppies come out healthy. As of today she is 7 weeks since the AI. Thanks for everyone's help and information, can never get enough! Have a great day! The weekend is almost here.....FINALLY!
I agree with doing an xray about 1 week prior to due date
If you are still unsure at this stage, you need to know 100% (not almost 100%). My girl is due on 5/13 and she has been very obviously pregnant for 2 weeks now, and it sounds like your girl is due a little bit before mine. She may just have 1 or 2 puppies in there, so it is less obvious. Xray will show little skulls and spines if you do it close to delivery and you will be able to count puppies.

It's obvious but
not as much as I guess I thought it'd be. She's put on six pounds so far thru seven weeks an I guess I was just expecting her to get larger. I do agree that it is probably a small litter, especially being her first litter. From weeks 3-5 I was just scared of a false pregnancy. Like I said earlier now I just want to be 100% an to know the litter size an to make sure mama is healthy. A full nine weeks would be May 10. My vet wants to see her on May 3.
Heather - Glad you chimed in on the xrays
I knew that sometimes to early they might not show anything because the bone isn't viable. And that ultrasound is the preferred method. How is Rosie doing?
She's doing well, Deb
It's getting to the point that she can't get up on the couch, which frustrates her. Still ravenous all the time--I doubt that she'll ever go through the not eating phase! Dr Johnson is going to be back on the 14th, so we have her scheduled at noon. That's day 62 from ovulation, so hopefully she doesn't go in to labor before that. After what happened to Nellie, I am taking off work starting May 11th so I can watch her all the time. It's coming up quickly!
Thanks for asking!
