4 month old puppy vomits food and it comes out her nose

I am stumped on this one so hoping some of you may have some insight on what this could be.  This puppy had milk pour from her nose when she nursed and since she has been weaned she has had food discharge from her nose.

I had a barium xray done at 4 weeks-normal.

She has been on antibiotics on and off for a couple of months.

Decided to remove tonsils as they were constantly swollen and infected.  Not sure if this was caused by the regurgitating or if this was indeed the problem from the beginning.  The pup is 2 days since surgery and she is 4 months old.  I do not see any improvement.

When the vet removed the tonsils the palette was perfect. Nothing to trim and looked like an average dogs palette.  Trachea is good too.

The last thing to do is an endoscopy and I was quoted $2700-$3500.

6 vets (some specialists) say everything looks normal from what they can see.

If she vomits why does it come out her nose instead of her mouth?  She can vomit many hours after she had eaten too. No pattern to this. Some days are worse than others.

Has anyone been through this? and if so, did it get resolved?

I have not had this happen and no advice....

But I wonder if it is the food she is on causing the vomiting? Have you determined the actual reason she vomits? I know I have had liquid come out my nose if I laugh or swallow wrong when I drink, maybe this is similar to what she is doing? Shoot, I just don't have any answers, but I am interested to find out what others say. And I wish you the very best with that girl.

Food is raw..

She eats ground raw chicken and the veges and fruit are mixed depending on what is in the house at the time.  I give her digestive enzymes, sometimes omega 3 oil or ground flax.  I even had her try kibble too but that made it worse.  I wouldn't call it vomiting as much as I would a burp and back goes the head, she can't breathe and bile, mucus, a little food comes out her nose.  I don't think its the food because she has been like this since birth.

Everything points to a cleft baby but no cleft or palette problems.

Pepcid

I have had experience with the nasal discharge of milk and gruel years ago, but not with the vomiting at that age.  The nasal discharge was caused by a neurological deficit in a swallowing muscle that was deteremined by the symptoms and barium x-ray.  He was put on canned food at 4 weeks and gradually was able to eat solid dry kibble without a problem.  Then he was given water by bottle which he still uses..  When he had a vomitting issue it was when he was older and it was the bile, sometimes foamy bile and we were directed to give the Pepcid once or twice daily, and I believe was given for a short period of time, perhaps a month or so, and it didn't recur.  This boy will be 8 years old, and he's perfectly healthy otherwise.  I realize this is not the exact problem you are experiencing, but thought it was somewhat similar.  Good luck with your puppy.

Pepcid....hmmmm.

I like this idea.  Worth a shot anyway.  If the regurgitating is due to an upset tummy then maybe that will at least settle things down.

I will let you know how it works.

Cindy, I don't have any

answers, I wish I did.

I just remember that when I was pregnant that I would do that, and it was the worst. It is indelibly etched in my memory since one time it was after eating jalapeno peppers.

It sounds as if you are doing everything right.

Let us know if the pepcid helps.

Love to your girl.

the big comcern is

fluid coming from the nose ......aspirated pneumonia is a big big concern......try giving two tums before a meal...some times these bullies hava sensitive stomach....make sure an hr after eating their is no playing...make your meals on a set schudue...keep them as reg as possible.....it sounds like gastic reflux..and just means she gets her stomach acids active waiting for a meal...also if at all possibe try feeding three meals a day this helps alot....she grow out of it....also i would be concern about a cleft platllet...a small hole in the roof of the mouth but if the vets have been in their they would of seen that....as long as she is growing and maintaing weight  your ok

nope no pneumonia....yet

She was just put under with anaesthetic 3 days ago and had her tonsils removed.  Apparently, all is still clear in her lungs and its all upper respiratory.  I am concerned about rhinitis if this continues. Her nasal cavities smell pretty bad but the antibiotics are keeping things pretty clean for now.

Her weight is good and she is a chunky monkey.  She was the runt of the litter but has since caught up.

I have scheduled the endoscopy at a clinic in Michigan for under $300.  In canada the same procedure $3500!!! Figure that one out!!

It is like indigestion but I am perplexed why out her nose and not her mouth?  Cleft has not been detected even when they got a good look after tonsils were removed. Very frustrated but hoping we have a good outcome.  Best thing is she will outgrow it. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Jacinda and the bullies's picture

My dogs had nasal mites

One of them picked it up at the Opthamologist and shared it with the others. Their symptoms were sneezing and a nasal discharge. My Vet swabbed the nose and saw the mites under the microscope. The treatment was Ivermectin.

Dang, that doesn't sound like fun at all.

Poor pups:-( How long did it take to get them clear Jacinda?

Sorry I didn't call you back...I didn't think about it for a few days, then figured you were working again so I am waiting until I know you are off a day!!!

My puppy is also vomiting out the nose, need help quick!!

I know this is an old post.  I am dealing with this same thing.  Puppy is 13 weeks old, but is a Boston Terrier.  We are seeing the internal medicine specialist at the local large emergency hospital tomorrow morning.  I adore this little guy and will die for him.  I'm also going to send a PM to the person who started this thread.  Not sure if she's still around or not.  ANY info I can get may be helpful.  I'm desperate!

Thanks to all of you!  Joyce and Kaden!
