2 questions about raw... #1 Hydration, #2 Oxtail

My first question is if anyone noticed their Bully drinking less once they switched them to raw. Stella and Dolly (my lab) drink almost nothing throughout the day. I used to have to refill the water bowl several times a day. Now yes, it is much cooler... barely getting to 75 lately as opposed to the 105 it was last month. But I also thought that it's probably natural because the raw is hydrated whereas the dog food is dried or dehydrated and so therefor there's plenty of water in the raw already. I feed Stella and Dolly the Natures Variety twice a day and then I give them some other sort of non processed raw at least during lunch, if not more than once as a snack.

Today they both drank less than 3 cups of water total. Yesterday it was about the same. I did notice them drinking a little more when I was using the plastic bowl but yesterday I switched to glass. I haven't had a chance to get to the pet store so I am just using a glass baking dish. The water level moved about an inch. - Maybe their water was partially evaporating before? I do keep my house at 75 though so that doesn't seam too likely, although it's definitely evaporating from my fish tank but that water is heated too.

So... besides the fact that the raw is hydrated... what's the chance that maybe the kibble was possibly dehydrating them and so the raw is like a double (good) whammy.... - No added salt to dehydrate them and it's already got natural moisture.

What do you think?

Question #2

I bought Oxtail the other day. I noticed a lot of people here had mentioned it. I'd never heard of it before and I looked over the packaging and it just looked like cut up beef so, not giving much thought to what it was (thinking that surely it wasn't actually the tail of an Ox) I brought it home with me. Well today I opened the package and found that it's got some sort of bone in it... and it's in chokeable size pieces. :( So I pulled out the 2 largest ones I could find and let the dogs take their prize/lunch outside. - I'm worried about choking though. What do you all do as far as Oxtail is concerned? - My lab litterally engulfs her Natures Variety (8oz) in one bite. She opens her mouth and somehow swollows that thing that's about 3-4 inches in diameter and 3-4 inches tall in one swollow. So I'm worried that she won't be patient enough with something with small bones like that.

raw is about 70% moisture

and kibble is no more than 10% moisture, so yes there is a big difference in water needed. Audrey does not drink as much as she used to either.

I am not much help on the oxtail-Audrey can't handle bones so I don't bother with them.

About all that moisture

Chumlee wet his crate today :(  It was his first time being crated since going raw. (day 3)    *sigh*  I think he did it because he wanted a sponge bath, lil turd!  And the guy that sits on the other side on the couch says, "I'm going to pee myself tonight and see what happens."

My dogs don't drink as much either I use to change the water bowl 3 times a day.

Less Water Too

I too notice Eddies water intake is very little now as I have switched him to raw about a month ago. I have now started adding some water to his raw meal sometimes to make sure he does get enough, and considering he pee's like a race horse I know he is hydrated. My little ShiTzu is on raw too and she also has very little water. At least I have a comparison, but as for the tears stains on Eddie!!!! They are not getting better and unfortunatley he looses patches of hair and gets itchy when I give him chicken or anything with feathers. He is eating raw venision (as my kids and hubby are hunters) and lamb tripe ,mixed offal+ kelp, cider vinegar, bit of garlic, salmon oil, ground carotts, sometimes cooked sweet potato, just have to add ground bone as raw bone freaks me out. The butcher suggested to go for a month on just the tripe to clean out his system as the red meat may contribute to tear stains. I am very lucky to have a butcher who runs an independed raw dog food program. This is sure all trial and error.

Thanks!!!!!

It is so sad to see their sweet faces get so red and icky with these stains. My breeder is out of suggestions too and she has been around this breed for over 30 years.

salmon oil

could be your problem...read the ingredients on the package....you have to watch all your additives...i would stop all additives...then add them back one at a time...two weeks apart to see if their are any reactions....but i have seen aload of problems dissapear with the removal of processed salmon oil....i would also dump the sweet potatoe thats just a filler with no benefits at all....also its a starch thats hard to digest and has alot of sugar

Good idea!!!

I thing I will take this approach. I guess it is like an elimination diet. My concern is if they are getting a complete meal with just meat and bone.

ROTFLMAO!

Ok, so I guess we have to give them credit for loving the furbabies enough to deal with the nasty raw meat for us!

I tried to put a pic of my hubby chopping meat outside in the snow but I can't get it to work.

i use only pig tails

and it should be a tail attached to a nice pc of fat.....i have never used ox tail....the only thing with pig tails is once they unfreeze they look like rat tails...so its some thing i only do very very rarely...yuck the dogs love them...but they have a tendency to run around with them in their mouths and that is gross gross gross....

be wary with hydration....it takes alot less water to process raw than kibble but make sure your dog is drinking...wilson started having problems with stones in his urine...and when i took him to the vet he was so dehydrated we had to give fluids...he never showed any signs he was that dehydrated!!!!!   now he has always been  a low water drinker...so i bought him a fountain and he loves it and i have not had any stones in his urine since......becasue raw has so much water dogs dont feel as thristy...and since bulldgos dont get out and run around and exercise to feel thristy watch the input....and make sure their drinking a reasonable amt of water for them

Thanks everyone!

I finally got to the store and bought a metal water bowl and food bowls. I think both dogs have drank out of them and it's only been a couple of hours. Maybe she didn't like the glass bowl or who knows... but she is drinking, not a ton but is drinking.Or maybe she was ust put off by the new flavor of water... I tried a glass of our tap water and it tasted terrible... like I was drinking mud. So I put on a filter (with mineral filter too) and tried a glass and the water tasted amazing... So much better than the other water. I was able to drink it without cringing and I HATE water. So that really says something, lol. Maybe she was snubbing the non-dirt water and when she finally gave it a chance she figured out she liked it. lol

So I started feeding Stella more today because she's been acting ravished... well as it turns out, she doesn't want more, She completely snubbed her dinner. - Think those babies are crowding her in there. Poor girl. Just 9 days left!

As for the Oxtail, I guess I'll find a way to grind up the bone or something.
