I live in North Dakota and am trying to find a Board Certified Surgeon to do a total Hip replacement on my 1 1/2 year old baby girl Roxie. I am willing to travel up to 14 hours away. I actually have an appt. set up for University of Minnesota on Monday June 18th but have conflicting reports on the doctor she is set up to see. I would greatly appreciate any personal experience or recommendations anyone can offer as soon as possible. I am wanting to get her In ASAP. I want my baby to start having a happy healthy life!!!! I am looking at the University of Colorado Vetinary Medicine in Ft. Collins or maybe a private practice that does the procedure. HELP!!!
There is a really good ortho dr here in Phoenix...
probably too far for you to travel though. His name, appropriately enough, is Dr. Bone.
Not sure where you live in ND, but...
I know the rescue I volunteer for has an excellent ortho surgeon that has helped us with several of our dogs. Generally speaking, the vet is located in the Chicago area...so I'm not sure if that is out of your range. If you'd like info please let me know (in a private message) and I'll be more than happy to get the name and phone number to you.

My swimming bully buddy!
First Off... Are you sure
such a drastic surgery is absolutely necessary. I would want a 2nd and maybe even a 3rd review to make sure this is the right surgery. IMO if the dog so dragging it's rear end then ofcourse the surgery is necessary. What is she doing that tells you you need such a drastic surgery?
It's unusual for Bulldogs to have hip replacements
I'm assuming you were told she has hip dysplasia. Right? The hip surgery is pretty brutal for a dog and often there are complications. Permanent nerve damage is one complication. If it were my dog, I would get a second opinion from a good Vet who sees lots of bulldogs.
I have a girl that was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at 2 years. I have since treated her with Adequan and she is doing fine at 7 years.
I agree. It is very radical surgery,
And I would NOT have it done for my girl. I would do other treatments to control the issue.

I have to agree...a very drastic surgery...
Not something I would take just an opinon on. I have a boy with horrible hips, ACL's and knees....NO surgery for us. We treat him with meds and he is living a great life.
My heart is breaking for
My heart is breaking for you. I am going throught he exact same thing. My Girl was diagnosed at 6 months. I opted to not do the TPO surgery and try supplements and therapy. She has had some relief. My last specelist told me that most dogs who are young and show signs of hip dysplasia grow into their hips by 14-16 months in age. Babe is only 11 months. She was doing really well but injureed her front shoulder and has had limited exercise for that last 2 weeks. These growing pains and very hard on her and us as a family. A friend just recommeded Winston's Joint system. I ordered it on sat and had them 2 day air it to me. Babe just had anther bad day last friday. The testemonuials look wonderful and I know someone who said it works. Maybe one last thing for you to try. It's one f my last options too. I should get my supply on wednesday.
You should try Adequan
It works great.
Colorado Canine Orthopedics
Thank you all for your advice!!!!! Let me start by saying I did not make this decision without a lot of sleepless nights! Roxie had a luxating hip and we have been dealing with it for months but it got to the point where it was bone on bone and it was shaving the hip bone tip down so that it would no longer go back into place. It was very painful for my baby and I wasn't going to watch her go through that. After a lot of research, I found the mos wonderful place in the world!!!!! Colorado Canine Orthopedics in Colorado Springs. We were able to get Roxie down there last Thursday and in for surgery on Friday. The goal was for a total hip replacement but as we all know bulldogs are a little odd shaped and Dr. Swainson felt that she would just have more complications with it done. She, instead, had an FHO, which I was concerned about but you should see how good she is getting around already! CCO was absolutely the best, lots of experience with bullies and the facility was amazing!!! There is not another place I would ever take my dog to again except there for something major!!!
what great news
You have made a very good decision for your girl and it paid off. I am so happy to hear she is feeling better. I know how hard it is to see your bully in pain. I am thinking the procedure was a femoral head osteotomy where thay shaved down the head of the femur for a better fit. Does she have some hardware in there? I am interested because I am a nurse in pediatric orthopedics as well as my beloved Mr. Higgins has had 3 knee surgeries with a patella removal, hence my interest in canine orthopedics and love reading about it and learning. How wonderful you were able to provide this for her.
Let us know how her recovery is going.
Deborah and Mr. Higgins
Roxie does not have any
Roxie does not have any hardware and it was a Femoral Head Osteotomy. She is continuing to do extremely well. She wants to go play and run around but she is not allowed to yet, so she is being quite a handful!
