Your stock

I get few answers on the board, maybe I'm like Borat's brother, "I no get it"
But I wondered how many folks have Hetherbull Bounty's Frigate and Cherokee Legend Pretty Boy both in their stock, in the same dog?

pedigree reading

Hi, Indy

As stated previously Frigate is in Pretty Boy's peigree so it would be logical to see both. Pretty boy is a midwest dog (located within minutes of you in Indianapolis), so to see him in your pedigree is not uncommon for your area.
I think I mentioned to you before that we are having a Bulldog Club of Indiana meeting this Sat. 12/19/09. I feel it will beneficial for you to attend. If you would like an unbiased opinion on you pup, then bring him with you. My husband (John) and I will take a good look at him for you.
If you still need ears glued on the lil one, we will help you. Time and info on web site www.bulldogclubindiana.org
Finally, Pretty Boy's owner will be in attendance, so you could discuss his ancestry with her.

You are experiencing...

a very common experience. You buy a bulldog as a pet, you start wanting to know more about the breed because of its great qualities as a pet and you start frequenting websites like this one and you want to experience the world of showing Bulldogs. Showing dogs is a very competitive, subjective and at times brutal sport. If you decide you want to show your dogs go to several shows in your are and compare your dogs to what is being shown. Do they look similar? Go to the BCA website and get a copy of the Official Bulldog Standard, read it over and over and try to comprehend its meaning. Contact a Bulldog Club in your area, join the club. Find an experienced Bulldogger that can help you understand the Standard and is willing to give you a honest opinion of your dog. Listen, and Learn you will not be a expert in this breed in 5 years...you will always be a student of this breed. Once you decide you know everything that there is to know about the breed you need to get out...you will never know everything about this breed or for that matter any breed.
Pedigrees are great tools for Breeders, Frigate and Pretty Boy have been used alot due to the quality of pups they sire, though not all are champions or showdogs, far from it. As Elizabeth said Frigate is an ancestor of Pretty Boy. I for one would never consider a breeding if I didnt know the good and the bad represented in a Dog or Bitches pedigree.
If you choose to join us it can and is a rewarding experience. That being said you will lose a hell of alot more than you win, if you cant handle that dont even start. Remember that this is something you should enjoy...when it becomes work you should reconsider your choice. Hope to see you in the ring.

Very true

Oh we do. We got Buddy a puppy , his 1/2 brother so he would have doggie friends to love on. They both see 2 vets, one a Bulldog specialist, eat better than I do, and have better insurance.

Their breathing, their hearts, joints, and general health is more important to me than the ring.

I'm still trying to figure out some things, I maybe should have found out before I got a dog, my intention was never to show, till lately. It's just all new to me.

actually there are probably alot

Since you are hoping for a response, both of those dogs have been used extensively and are in alot of pedigrees... its a matter of how far you have to go back to see them. I am sure thare are lines that dont have them in there... but the real question is not what the pedigree of the dog is but whats the quality of conformation of your dog as it compares to the standard.

Pedigrees are only on paper and are not the sole decider in the quality of the offspring... those two dogs probalby had the help of alot of other dogs contributing genetics as well and not every puppy produced by a dog is show quality. There are alot of dogs out there that were known to produce well and are in a large number of pedigrees just as the two you mentioned are and not every pup from them was showable either. There are alot of factors to consider.

Dont make the mistake of being enamored with a piece of paper... learn the standard and place value on the quality of a dog in question and while you are doing that... also love your boy unconditionally whether he turns out to be a show dog or not.

Just my opinion...

Re: Your stock

Frigate is a Pretty Boy ancestor, so any Pretty Boy pedigree has Frigate in it.

Thank You Jay...Very well stated and helpful

I really appreciated the way you put this. As a new member to the world of showing and breeding, I value any information I can receive from individuals such as yourself that have such a great wealth of knowledge and experience with our breed.

If you are wanting a show quality pup then you need to make that

before you purchase a puppy. It is no good buying a pup as a pet and then deciding you might like to show because there is a high chance your pup will not be fit for the ring but that doesn't change the fact that your Bulldog is the perfect pet happy.gif

Thanks

Thanks for all the responses. I was confused for one reason cause HBF is on the sires side, and CLPB is on the dams. That's Brother
Buddy is a Grandson of CLPB. So like you all say I should learn a lot, cause I'm an empty vessel for sure. Having never been to a meeting, will I be in a Bulldog friendly setting? I'd feel weird with a Bulldog in someone home, but I would like to have Buddy looked over. Brother is too young to socialize with other dogs yet.

Pedigrees

The dog you see before you is probably greater than 80 percent the result of its pedigree, with the remaining percentage accounting for environmental influences to include diet, training and other things (and yes, the numbers are debatable). The names on that piece of paper called the pedigree represent the dogs and their component features/traits/characteristics and in turn, those traits represent the genes and combination of genes of each dog and of the generations before them.

We all admire particular dogs for different and various reasons. The trick is to figure out why we admire a dog/bitch - what features do we admire, what virtues are our eyes drawn to and how do those stack up against The Standard? Why would that particular dog/bitch be good to have in your pedigree? How likely is it that the genes or combination of genes that made up those desirable characteristics will be available if the dog/bitch is incorporated into a pedigree?

I know just what you are talking about!

It only took about 5 minutes for me to become completely infatuated with bulldogs when I met my puppy. She made me want to be around other bulldogs and people who love bulldogs, and I wanted as much information as I could get. I wish I had found this board earlier! The BCA meetings turned out to be a few hours away, nothing really local for me. When I started looking at the standard to see if my girl could compete, I found myself picking her apart piece by piece and not feeling too good about it. I would think her ears were 'wrong', too high on her head and there is definitely something 'wrong' with her jaw/nose/don't even know exactly what it is, but that's when I realized I would never make it showing her. I was offending myself with criticizing her, I would not be able to take it coming from others. I know there is nothing wrong with a pet bulldog, and I am content with that. Maybe in the future though!

I realized this when I was looking into Audrey's pedigree

when asked what her line was I had no idea so I got out her 3 generation pedigree and started looking up the dogs on it. One of them was the top dog 2 years in a row, and I was so excited! Then I realized that 99.9% of the search results for his name were part of other dogs' pedigrees and I thought if there was an award for most offspring this dog would get that too! Still nice to know he's in there though. wink.gif
