What's your opinion?

A show is coming up this winter where the judge is only licensed to do obedience and Bulldogs. No big deal, right? He lives in this town that he is judging at. No big deal, right? It's a small city of about 150K a few hours from the nearest city its size or bigger. Only one locally known Bulldog breeder lives there. They show almost exclusively within a hundred mile radius of this town. Which in west Texas means they don't show much. Still no big deal, right?

This judge is only listed as having judged Bulldogs one time since 1998. I have no idea who he is or even if I should know who he is. He is not listed as a member of BCA. He is not listed as the breeder of any champion Bulldogs. A person with the same name did own a champion Bulldog in 1966.

Would you show? Skip the show? I have not decided, but we will almost assuredly go ahead and take the chance and show that weekend.

The situation just seems odd to me and I'm curious if others view it the same or not.

More info

The criteria for becoming a judge has changed numerous times over the years. If you investigate judges and look to see how many champions they have bred you will find that some that are considered breeder judges may only have one or two champions and technicallly they may have not had to have any at the time they applied, still don't actually.

Jeanne Zalud just called me to give me more information on this judge. His name is Jerry Holman. He did have Bulldogs back in the '60's. He did show Bulldogs and compete in obedience. The Zalud's and the Holman's were friends and well acquainted with each other. The Holman's moved to Texas several years ago and so that is why he doesn't fit as a Bulldog person from Texas to me. The Zalud's consider him to be an honest judge that will judge dogs and give his opinion on them not whether or not he recognizes this person or that.

So, we will obviously be showing that weekend with confidence that he will do the job that he is hired and paid for, Judge the Dogs.

Thanks for the help Jeanne.

Re: What's your opinion?

There is a formal process by which a judge becomes a judge so whoever this person is I believe he had to have bred 4 or 5 champions, judged at so many 'match' shows, stewarded at so many point shows in bulldogs or just stewarded (know obedience judge requirements better), have taken a written exam, I believe they have to have had mandatory education with bulldogs like they do at the Nationals with the 'judge's education seminar'. They have to have 'apprenticed' a certain number of times ie, been in the ring with a judge who has experience judging the breed and just stand there, watch, get out of the way and also discuss why the judge that day picked who he/she picked. I think they can then judge under 'provisional' license meaning the AKC representatives will be keeping an eye out for them as they must know how to run their ring, judge in a timely manner, and have some reason, if asked by a rep, why they chose this dog over that....though I could be entirely wrong about that...I know when you are provisional in obedience the Rep can ask you why you scored this dog a higher mark than that dog or how they came to the conclusion of how many points to take off.
In obedience, you have to have taken at least one dog through completion of Utility Dog title, stewarded and matches and point shows, judged an match shows or rare breed shows, take a written test, be in the ring with an experienced judge and go over the score sheets with the judge and I am not sure how many of each any more. I got to the point of being eligible to take the test and decided it didn't want to judge...which is also part of the process...you find out if it is really 'for you' or not.
