Re: Top 3 signs of a bad breeder

I would have to agree with what E said.

Also, a breeder that doesn't have goal(s) in mind. (ie: To make change when/where needed in their breeding programs).

A breeder that promotes "Champion" linage from dogs that they own & yet will not make a point to show the best pup out of their litters or to have it shown. But will be glad to tell you it's a show potential. And keep pumping out puppies for sale.

One that doesn't care to check off 'limited reg' on AKC papers when they can clearly see that the individual in question should not be bred or shown but will sell it on 'full reg'.

A breeder that fails to keep track of their records.

Just a few that came to mind. - Kim

Re: Top 3 signs of a bad breeder

The conditions where the dogs were raised is key and that mom is on the premises and there is ample documentation of the stud dog.
Condition of the dogs themselves. Obviously some moms look rough after puppies, but the general condition of all the dogs is really something to look for.
Its hard to label someone who is new as a bad breeder, as you just don't know enough about them yet, so you cannot say years of experience makes one breeder better than another, besides some bad breders have been around a long time. The same with show experience. I used to think that only show people were worth dealing with. I know some show people who fail in the first two categories and fail miserably, so I personally cannot recommend that showing dogs makes someone a better breeder than someone who does not.
I think that the treatment and condition of the dogs has to be two of the the key indicators of a quality breeder.

Show experience

If they have little or no show experience, let alone success. I think it is imporant for a good breeder to be active with the BCA and the process of showing dogs, especially at specialty shows. They don't have to be showing every week - but should consider themselves "actively involved".

Signs

1. Sells dogs out of the back of a truck at Wal-mart/petsmart.
2. Will not answer your emails or phone calls after you have purchased their puppy.
3. Brags about going to pet auctions and buying dogs.

I like this list

n/m

Lets see

Where to begin.
#1. They dont ask any questions about you or what your plans are for the dog.
#2. Open registration.
#3. Boasts openly that they always have dogs & pups available for sale.
#4. Wont let you come to the house to see their set-up. Will meet you at the Walmart parking lot.
#5. Filthy smelly conditions.
#6. Dogs are not registered. Theres a reason for that!
#7. Sells imports. Puppymillers are good at that.
#8. Will accept MC, VISA, American Express and even will offer Fast Cash option. They will figure out a way for you to buy a dog from them. Its all about the $$$$$.

I could go on but thats enough for now. LOL

I agree with E....

but would say the #1 sign of a bad breeder would be, if they are willing to sell you a dog right away, and havnt even asked your name,(like a pet store)let alone if you know how to look after your new puppy, or if you have had any experience even having a pet b4!
People looking for "pet" bulldogs often dont care if the breeder shows their dogs or not....so if the article is for the general public, I would not say that would be in the top 3, if it is for the "show world" then show records would be my second pick next to cleanliness and condition of the breeders dogs.

Are you asking us for our answers?

If you want us to give input here my three choices - but not necessarily in this order 1) filthy conditions with dogs all over the place 2) Can't see the pedigree or AKC litter registration slip 3) Not allowed to see the mama dog or at the very least, photo's of the daddy.
