tear stains and dog food

I've seen this topic discussed before. I can use your help! I have been feeding Diamond lamb and rice, tonight I noticed tear stains. I know there are a multitude of reasons for tear stains, dog food being one of them. Would you mind sharing your experiences. Please let me know what foods may have contributed to staining and which ones you have had no problems with. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

To everyone who offered advice, shared experiences, I truly appreciate you taking the time!

Re: Tylan question

Yes, I mean the poultry Tylan. It is VERY bitter and tastes awful. (trust me...I have gotten it on my hands and then put it in my mouth!) It is definitely safe for puppies. Vets use the injectable version of it (Tylosin inj.) for gastic upset. In small pups (and also for adult dogs who won't eat it) I use empty gel caps that I buy at a local organic health food store. For pups, 1/8 tsp once a day for a 10-12 lb pup. If you have pups around 18-20 lbs, you have to increase the amount to 1/8 tsp twice a day. Give for a week. Helps to get rid of overgrowth of bacteria in the gut when the pup has had diarrhea. It does NOT cure coccidiosis and it is an antibiotic. We've had some cases where pups had horrible diarrhea and there were no parasites in the stools. Remember that E. coli can become overgrown in puppies just like it can in humans.
As for using for tear stains, I do just sprinkle about 1/8 tsp on their food once a day...about a pinch.

i used 1/8tsp

mixed in the kibble daily, mix with water over kibble with some wet food.

I have not used it under a dog who is 1 as i had heard of teeth staining.

It tastes awful too

Tylan Question

Do you mean the regular, yellow Tylan powder used in poultry? What dosage do you give and how long for tear stains and for diareaha? Also, how do you get them to take it? It smells awfull.

Thanks
Ken

Tylan ok for young dogs?

I've heard that Tylan should also be used after 1 year. Have you seen problems with teeth using Tylan under 1 year?

Re: tear stains and dog food

not sure about food, but I do think it has to do with water. None of my dogs have had any tear stains since I moved to a home with a MAJORE water purification sytem on it 2yrs ago, cause the owner had liver diease. I only clean wrinkels every two weeks if needed and there faces are always white.

Re: tear stains

It really does depend on the individual dog. Usually my pups get tear stains around 4 or 5 months. Usually Tylan powder works quite well or tetracycline (after the age of 1 year). Most of my dogs have white faces and no tear stains. Sadie is over 10 and hasn't had a dark tear stain ever to my knowledge. Some of the younger ones do have slight staining but I think that as they mature the tear stains seem to subside in most dogs. Keep the faces cleaned off with wipes every day. As the new hair grows in, then the hair should be white. (after Tylan or one of the other products.) I guess that Angel Eyes is a good productbut I would ask why use that if the active ingredient is Tylan powded? Tylan is much less expensive than Angel Eyes. I've found Tylan to be a good staple to have around as it is also very good for young pups with diarrhea. (helps when they just can't get rid of the diarrhea after weaning)

I agree

Tear stains caused by this or that brand of food is false unless the dog has an allergy..If thats the case the tear stains are caused by the moisture and warmth of the skin between the wrinkle pattern promoting the growth of bacteria..Bacteria is causing the stink face and staining..The best way to pervent them is keeping the area clean and dry using an antibacterial wipe daily to the area..Stained hair will slough off and the new hair growth will be clean and white..Luckily the hair in that part of the body grows very fast..There are several products to diminsh tear staining such as Angel Glow, Angel Face....The active ingriedent is Tylosin or Tylan, an antibiotic..

I think people feel more comfortable useing the angel eyes or glow because its a measured dose..We just use the tylan powder in the water...Mixing one 1/2 teaspoon to a teaspoon per gallon....

very much based on the individual dog

One of my dogs has always had very bad tear stains. I used to feed kibble; I tried Timberwolf, Canine Caviar and Canidae. I have since switched to raw feeding, and have been feeding raw for about a year. There has been no difference in the tear stains whatsoever. I have heard that any kibble with beet pulp in it will contribute to tear stains. I have heard that tap water will aggravate tear stains. All my animals drink filtered water. I have had his eyes checked and there are no problems. I beleive, unless there is an issue with the eyes like entropian, that tear staining is due to either environmental or food-related allergies and/or head structure. I honestly don't think food brand plays a large part in tear staining unless the dog is allergic to an ingredient.

My girls' faces are white as snow....

I've been feeding Pedigree adult small bites for several years.

Good luck,
Sue
