The Stud Dog

I do alot of education I found this on the stud dog written by Bruce Hollenbeck a old time bulldogger.
The stud owner should also recognize his share of the responsbilty in breeding bulldogs. He must be able to put the welfare of the breed above his own interests. Although it is the breeder who makes the decision of when his bitch is to be bred, the stud owner can greatly assist if it is a maiden bitch, one shipped in or if the breeder is a novice. Also he should face the full value of his prerogative to approve of the breeding. the bitch may have the same faults as the male. if so,the stud owner should suggestthat his stud is not the one to breed to. This action may require some soul searching, as most stud owners need the stud fees to cover some of his expense.

May I add to this -- Eye Cert and Heart

should also tested. I would do blood panel and thyropid tests. Hips are usually xrayed at 2 years and I'm guessing the other are about the same. Trach came be xrayed young for a base but I would also xray before breeding.

I would also say that a future breeder needs have a mentor to assist with the care of the bitch with the whelping of the puppies and be but a phone call away and close enough to come to your house if needed and assist with the section.

Bitch proven in the show ring is great but unfortunately all-breed judges are not the best to critique our breed. Many don't have a clue what is correct. I would prefer breeders to give you the most honest opinion of your bitch.

Pedigree should be considered to compliment each.

I take them to the vet and I also get to see them

I have their spine, shoulders, hips and trachea size x rayed (for example trachea size should be a minimum of 7) and compared to other Bulldogs. You cannot compare a Bulldogs x ray's to a German Shepherd for example because there is no comparison.

When you say "X-Ray"....

of what? I presume its her hips and spine? I am in the medical field and know my way around X-Rays, but when looking at bulldogs, I am not too verse in what is normal or abnormal. And how many bullies have bad hips or knees with somewhat normal looking X-Rays at the time when they are 2-3 years old and develop problems around 4 or 5 years old? I assume that you know what you are looking for, so do you require to see them first or do you take them to your vet? Just curious.

I would say yes to someone who has proven their

bitch in the ring and would be complimented by my stud dog. You must know your dogs faults to be able to see what the bitch could give to the puppies that the stud dog couldn't and vice versa. I would need to be certain that this particular mating would IMO better the breed.

The bitch must alsio be x rayed as I have x rayed all my breeding dogsd/bitches and will continue to do so.

Who would you say 'Yes" to?

I will hopefully be in the breeding situation in a few years time and looking into potential Studs. So under what conditions would you say 'Yes' and let your Stud be 'of service'? What are other Stud owners looking for in a Bitch? Is there a good criteria or standard that we all should agree to that will help the breed? Lately I have been reading about tail amputations on BDW, and this is one area of great concern I have when looking for a stud. Show me your tail because my Tonka has a tail and according to the standard, that is what they should have.
Thanks for the input, can't wait to hear more opinions.
Cheers!

That is true

I have had so many people ask if they can use our boy and to this day I have said no to each and every one. Most people I am approached by have either an untitled bitch or one that IMO would not be complimented by my stud dog. It amazes me how many people see a good dog and think great he will do yet have done know research into how the pedigrees will go together.
