Rules Question

What are the rules applying to AKC dog shows in regards to ownership or co-ownership of a dog shown to a judge that may own or co-own that dog or another dog together?

(Not in sweeps or non-regular classes?)

Thank you in advance for your responses!

check this out...

that's right. It can be a retired 10 year old, but the co ownership is still in effect. I ran into this problem once;
I entered a show with a bitch I co owned with a bulldog judge.
Got up very early, drove very far only to find that the stewards would not give me my armaband number at the ring.
Go to the super's desk to find out why.
Seems this bulldog judge that I co owned with was judging sweeps for a completely different breed, in a completely different group!
Couldn't show our co owned bitch that day.
Be careful...

My Olivia was awarded a 3 point major....

when an exhibitor co-owned a bitch with the judge and showed to that judge. It was NOT the bitch presented to her that day but because of the relationship between the judge & exhibitor their bitch was disqualified. Their bitch took WB & BOS that day to finish her championship. She lost it all.

The judges name sounded familiar so I researched it to find out that about 5 years ago a bitch was shown that was co-owned with the judge & exhibitor. Upon calling the AKC I found out that the judge STILL co-owned the bitch with them.

Worked for me...

This subject came up a couple of weeks ago with regards to a Toy Fox Terrier entry and I enquired AKC

Here is the response:

Hello Jennifer,
It is simply that you cannot exhibit any dog to someone you co-own a dog
with.
This outlined in the Guidelines for Conformation Dog Show Judges on the
website at http://www.akc.org/rules/

So if you co-own with the judge, you cannot enter or show any dog to them, period. No dog owned by someone who co-owns with a judge can be shown/exhibited to them.
This also goes for ring stewarding. If I'm ring stewarding, no one who co-owns with me can show any dog in the ring I am stewarding, even if the particular dog they are showing is not in my name. And any dog co-owned by me is ineligible even if some one else is showing it. I opted out of a stewarding assignment last year when I discovered that three exhibitors would be ineligible to show any dog at the show. Same applies for judges. Sweeps judges are held to looser rules to encourage people to do sweeps and gain experience.

This is one of the many reasons AKC discourages co-ownership. If for instance someone enters a dog they co-own with another breeder, and it gets the points, then later they find out that the breeder they own with co-breeds or owns with the judge from that day, then those points can be taken away. And will be if someone protests.
