rabies shot..

I know I should post this in the health forum, but I'm lazy and tend to come right here..
Anyway, at what age do you first give a rabies shot? One of our puppy buyers told me their vet wants to give it at 12 weeks. This is way younger than I have ever given it. We usually wait until 6 months.
Comments?

6 months also...

Re: 6months

I agree too. The rabies vax is #1 in terms of adverse reactions, several being behavioral. People just don't recognize the signs as such. Things like reverse sneezing, fear/aggression issues and eating foreign objects are all linked to the rabies vax. The adjuvants in the vaccine attack the myelin which effects the nervous system. I say definitely no earlier than 6 months for that shot...if ever.

I do

16 wks.... I've read 6months on the med board, but I've never had any issues with the 16wks.

Re: rabies shot..

It is Virginia Law to vaccinate for Rabies by 16 weeks old. I prefer to wait till 6 mos as well and have run into some rude comments for making this stand at some clinics... OH WELL.

Re: rabies shot..

It's probably best to check the local ordinance where you live, but this is what it says according to Oklahoma law: OAC 310:599-3-9.1. Required immunization of dogs, cats, and ferrets (a) The owner or custodian of a domestic dog, cat, or ferret shall cause the animal to be vaccinated against rabies by the time the animal is four months of age and at regular intervals thereafter according to the label directions of an approved rabies vaccine for use in that species, or as prescribed by ordinances or rules adopted by a municipality within whose jurisdiction the animal owner resides.

Just as a note - in Oklahoma, if your animal did not receive the vaccination from a licensed DVM and that animal bites someone - they can destroy your animal on the spot with no observation period. It's at the descretion of the Animal Control agency/person involved.

Most all DVM's use a 3-year vaccine, and except for a couple of cities (Oklahoma City & Stillwater), all cities in Oklahoma require an annual rabies vaccination. But if the puppy is leaving the State of Oklahoma, they would no doubt have to meet the requirements of the State where the puppy will be going.

Rabies shots

You can give Rabies as early as 4 months..IF you are going to export to a quarentine country they strongly suggest you give rabies at 4 months..Specially if you are running them one here to shorten the time spent in quarentine...It has something to do with getting the tieter numbers up to where they need to be to pass quarentine requirements..Soo if you start at 4 months rather than 6 you can get your puppy a few months earlier..

Least thats how it was explained to me..

6months

most vets push it as the law. I just tell them i want to get it seperate from the other shots and will come back later. 6-8 months is later.

you increase the chance of an immune problem and them getting demodex

I was just discussing this with my Vet this morning

He wants to give it at 16 weeks and I told him I want to wait until 6 months. He said he would give it at whatever age I want.

6 months for me

As for the bigger breeds I've had only two that had it at 4 months, the borzoi and dogue.

Re: rabies shot..

Our vet, Dr. George Dennis, who is a very highly regarded bulldog vet in the midwest likes to give rabies with the last round of shots (16 weeks or so). However, I personally have opted to wait until 6 months in the past.

I agree

With Vicky , the later the better. It does lower the immune system , we learned this the hard way with our first litter. We did the shot at 6 months, they were entered in 2 shows 2 week-ends in a row, picked up kennel cough then boom puppy demodex. It took a few months to build their immunities back up.

I would wait.
