What is everyones opinion on still showing a dog in a non major show but yet the dog only needs it's two majors to finish? To me this does not seem right. I saw this happen and this dog took the point form a dog that needed one point to finish. I just kind of thought if you had a dog that had say 10 11 points and still needed its two majors to finish you don't show is a show that is not a major. I can completely understand if the show is supposed to be a major but someone pulls out and you are not aware. Just curious to others opinions on this.
my reverse nightmare
Needing a single to finsh.
My story.
Had a bitch, won 3 majors, one a specialty, lovely type, but hated to show (she was attacked in the ring).
Anyway, we won one of her majors in a different area and I did not count her point tally correctly. We got her final win, came home, bred her, put an ad in the Bulldogger and a CH cert never came.
Called AKC to find out we had 14 pts, 3 majors.
Had to wait for babies to wean, then re condition for show.
Long story short, despite many small all-breed shows, our beautiful girl never finished and a few times was beat by a local guy who insisted on showing his way over-pointed bitch who DID love to show.
Showmanship trumps quality under many judges who are judging without knowing the breed.
So, our lovely Beckett Award winner (mother of 6 champions)with 3 majors never finished.
So, yes, makes me angry when people show dogs at small shows who are singled-out.

I eventually gave up on one dog...
She had 10 points and no majors and we tried for quite a while to get majors but I could see that she had many virtues but also was too big for a bitch, and her topline was not what I wanted, her side and rear movement were nice but front movement completely converged to center, no matter how I moved her so I decided she could retire w/o her championship....besides...she was attacked (no contact but ferociously lunged at) by 2 different bulldogs (once of them twice...and that was a male) for doing nothing...just sitting next to me a good 7 to 10 feet from the other dogs....hence they didn't get her but she started to get 'paranoid' if other dogs looked at her and would give me a heart attack by letting out a loud horrible sounding bark while she jumped backwards from the dog who was looking at her...and I kept her distance from the ring or other dogs.
When I had 2 male dogs that only needed majors, I didn't attend a show, even if I had entered it, if it did not draw the possibility of a win, ie, in dogs or cross over major. Just didn't see the point in the money for gas and motel when there was no chance of finishing or taking a major and also saw no point in potentially taking the point from a dog that needed it. I have seen dogs with 3 majors struggle to get their last point or two for some odd reason...and I would not want to be the cause of that if it would not profit my dog in any way. Entries for the shows are minor compared to driving to them, staying in a motel etc.

Favors
come in all flavors - and sooner or later we all need some help. But I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to assist someone with no better sense than to show a dog merely to accrue 'pointless' points.
Maybe the different system of attaining a Championship under AKC than elsewhere molds my view?
My boy needs both majors.....
and if I enter a show that pulls majors(regardless of how the points are tabulated-be it a cross over for BW or going BBOS) I will show him, but with him being singled out it serves no purpose to show him and take pts from dogs that might be able to use them. He has been sitting out a good many shows lately because we enter shows that don't pull majors and he stays home or it pulls majors and they break when we get there.

To those who understand no explanation is needed. To those who don't no explanation is possible.
To show or not re: points
Frankly if my dog has "singled out" I won't enter a show that has a history of not making a major. If I have already paid my entry I will consider whether I feel I have a realistic chance of getting the major by going Best of Winners if it is a major in the other sex or Best of Breed or BOS if enough specials are entered. Otherwise I won't show. Showing is expensive and a lot of the competitors are also my friends. I feel like a am "stealing" points from someone who can use them if I can't.

I can see Elizabeth's point however Robin
its a pretty shallow victory if you need someone to do you a favour and stay home so you can finish your title IMO.

Re: Why should they not show their dog????
In order for a dog to become a champion in the US, he has to win 15 points, with two of the wins being "majors" (a 3, 4 or 5 point win based on entry) under two different judges.
If your dog has 35 points and no majors, the only thing that winning at a non major show is going to get you is 36 or 37 points. No closer to a championship.
If a dog has 14 points, 3 majors and only needs that point, the dog not needing the point wins and does not need it, it serves no purpose.
The arguement can be made if the dog needing the point cannot beat the dog with 35 points, maybe he should not be a champion holds water. On the other side of the coin, winning a series of 1 or 2 point shows and never being able to win larger entry shows is something to think about with the major-less dog.
The type of show often dictates the type of judge. Smaller, one and two point show often draw multi breed judges that judge way too many breeds for their ability and quality is not always the winner.
We do not show our champions in the classes here. They compete in a separate class, so constantly accruing points with no majors is pretty futile.
Re: only needing majors
Unless there is a mathematical chance of getting a major (i.e. BOW) the dog should be pulled. Otherwise it is doing no good to the winner and screwing the rest of the entries out of a chance for a point(s). Don't think people don't remember stuff like this happening - they may not be so inclined to 'help out' later if that person needs a favor.
Why should they not show their dog????
Your dog should achieve their title because they deserve it not because all the best dogs are sitting at home because you need a point.

I am sorry but I totally diosagree with this notion of leaving a better dog at home because someone needs a point. Where we live even grand champions are sill shown and everyone is in together.
pointless..
and bad sportsmanship.
