I think my 1 year old Teela has some really great strong points but she also has weak points like any other dog. I'm new at showing as well as learning more about the breed in general. After doing research on the breed I'm finding that her head is not correct, her nose isn't layed back enough. I look from the front and she looks pretty good, square, good jaw, ears look correct, it's her profile that doesn't look great. Also, what about female vs. male? Teela went up against a puppy in her last show, he was a month younger than her but his head was massive compared to hers. Teela still won which made me feel bettter Do you think judges keep in mind that the female bulldog is not as "massive" like the standard calls for?

Yes she did and bred her 6 months ago..
She was really petite and short backed. Maybull was nicer. However, this girls pups were pretty stunning! I am looking forward to seeing them grow.

Not Fullbren..
Just some old school Canadian stuff. The breeder I deal with was mentored by a some canadian breeders that spent their lives breeding. They have been long since retired. Some may know Charlie and Flo Kettle of Hounslow Bulldogs. They are the most respected Bulldoggers in Canada. They don't make them like that anymore.
The head is very consistent in their lines. Sadly, not much left to breed back to. No frozen semen.

now see///maybe i see things differently than others
but as a pup i would still have said that she was going to have nice layback...the nose even as a pup on her was set back, just the rope letting it look more exposed. Which is one of the things i said seems to often make dogs layback chancge or make them look nosey.
Her head as she matured is lovely. She reminds me so much of Mias dam and Mia in those pics ...very strange...does she have Fullbren in her pedigree?

IMO his layback was always there
I can see how you thought he was a bit nosey. in the first pic the placement is much lower than when he was older...interesting to see how it all moved up. So...was it his amazing jaw and upturn that pushed that all into place?
Amazing jaw at younger age as well but lovely as he matured. Very pretty head on him..
thanks for saring and as always thanks for helping me learn...its much appreaciated!

Here are some pics of my girl...
Rhiann,

Here is another example of how much layback can change with age. Look at the pup on the right. She is about 8 months old in this pic.
This is a recent pic at 2.5 years old. Slow maturing girl. I didn't think it would ever happen. She has the best personality in the world so it was easy waiting.

cant say i have ever seen layback come on with time??
is that really possible? Can anyone answer that. Either they have it or they dont is my understand.
Her dogs nose is not set back which creates a nosey appearance. And IMO when a dog has a split nose rope or lack of nose rope this makes the nose placement more visable as well as the shape of the skull and presentation of layback.
But as in any dog, this is just one fault. No dog is perfect and a good judge will look at the overall picture. But for me personally i am big on layback and nose plaement. Its 6 points on the scale of points! One of my favorite features of this breed besides the tail.

Re: cant say i have ever seen layback come on with time??
It can improve with age.. but to a point, and only up to a certain age.

i think it was E who posted pic of Oscar's head development

What i have seen is the nose tip back changes as they mature.

interesting..would love to see others pics
I dont see changes in Mias at all. IMO the layback was there from the get go, length of skull changed and from this discussion i can now say that she may be shelfy..
so you have seen nose placement change as well? A nose not set back can turn and set back as the head grows? Because a nosey dog doesnt have correct layback, IMP if you do the angle meansurement right where- it should only touch the tip of the nose..the line shouldnt have to make adjustments around a nose that is set out...

yes, as the head grows and the jaw projects out
the whole face changes, and the layback can and will change. Look at pictures of your bitch from when she was 6 months, 12 months, and then now. Im sure you will see some changes.

Elizabeth showed a pictures a while back of one of her boys, who's head changes alot from puppy to adult.

You are describing the 'layback'
once the wiskers are shaved...her face will appear more mature. How old is she?
[/IMG]
Some lines mature more quickly than others. Not having seen her in person, she appears to have wonderful nostrils, a good jaw and her layback can 'come on' with time. Her eyes are very nice. I think you have a very nice bitch there!

Re: Question regarding head & the standard
Remember that they are not all perfect. Your bitch does have some good qualities in her head. It is also very square when looking at her face on.
When people look for perfection to the point of overlooking some very good dogs with a flaw or two, they get into trouble, especially when they judge.
I don't accept major type faults well at all. I look for the basic outline to be there. It is only then I nit-pick the best of those with the correct outline to find the winner.

A massive head does not mean a correct head
and yes judges should give due consideration to the fact that the bitch is not as a grand as the dog.
![[linked image]](http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e395/laburgess/Bullybanner2.jpg)
Your bitch has lots of virtues, one being that she has a lovely wide lower jaw IMO You are right when you say her layback isn't great but this is a very common fault.
