"Animals are not ours to use for entertainment," says PETA's website - that
includes watching the Westminster Dog Show on television or in person! PETA
has a "NoBirth Nation" campaign to stop all breeding of dogs and cats and
states there's no such thing as a responsible breeder. If you don't believe
it just ask them or follow the national "legislative trail."
To read their mission statement in full there is a link at the URL below to
PETA's website. PETA and their associate "animal rights" groups (that go by
many different names) are opposed to ALL breeding, use and ownership of
animals. As the blog below says: "Breeding is not the sport -- dog showing
is." AKC has a plethora of performance events each year besides
conformation shows. Good blog below.

PETA compares AKC to the KKK
PeTA compares AKC to the KKK -- how's that for a bunch of inflammatory
acronyms?
A press release from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals hit my
email box this morning, announcing that a television ad "showing a hooded Ku
Klux Klan member making himself right at home at a meeting of the
"purebreds"-only American Kennel Club will hit New York TV stations just in
time to make the hair stand up on the heads of participants featured in the
annual telecast of the Westminster Dog Show."
Calling the show a "pageant," PETA considers the annual Westminster
gathering "irresponsible" because it "promotes dog breeding and spurs
interest in 'purebreds' while animal shelters overflow with unwanted mutts
who are in desperate need of homes."
"When it comes to contempt for 'mixed breeds' and a fetish for 'pure
bloodlines,' there's not much difference between the KKK and the AKC," says
PETA Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. "Not only does the AKC promote
breeding as a 'sport,' it also opposes spay-and-neuter laws that would save
the lives of hundreds of thousands of animals."
Where to start? First, if you're going to make a correlation between the
closed canine gene pools and unfortunate moments in human history, eugenics
concepts put forth in Nazi Germany is the better fit. Steve Budianksy does
an excellent recap of this in his book, "The Truth About Dogs."
As for the AKC aversion to mixed-breeds, PETA must have missed the memo
about the AKC considering opening up performance events such as obedience
and Rally to non-pedigree pooches. Cynics opine that this is as much an
economic imperative than a moral one, and they'd be right. But I'll take a
Boss Tweed over a Grand Wizard any day of the week.
Second, breeding is not the sport -- dog showing is.
Nachminovitch's last comment is a reference to AB 1634, the California law
that was narrowly defeated after opposition by purebred dog and cat breeders
because it required mandatory spaying and neutering of every puppy and
kitten at 4 weeks -- an age considered too premature by many (yours truly
included) because of potential health implications (increased risk of
osteosarcoma among them). In truth, reputable breeders sell all their
pet-quality puppies on contracts stipulating that they be spayed and
neutered.
The PETA ad concludes with the message "All dogs are created equal."
PETA is buying airtime on New York cable stations this week and in local
markets across the country.

We need to make NOISE!
Sticking our head in the sand, which is what we have been doing for years, is exactly what PETA and HSUS want us to do! As the old saying goes the squeaky wheel gets the grease!
Yes, PETA and the HSUS have lumped us into the same group as "Puppy Millers" Pet Stores etc. IT IS UP TO US TO CHANGE THIS PERCEPTION!
I have said this many times we are fighting individually for the most part HUGE, MONEY FAT groups, in PETA others, that have been working for years to infiltrate and lobby all Government entities with there cause! We on the other hand have just realized that there is a problem!
I am glad to see that these topics are "hot buttons" for most of us now. We have to start looking at, and focusing on BAD LEGISLATIVE issues the same way we do Rescue and Health Issues. It has to take precedence!
We need to become the SQUEAKIEST WHEEL!

Re: PETA compares AKC to KKK
AKC may register dogs from these other sources, and we do play by AKC rules with our dogs in order to show them, but we need to get the word out to the public that a "breeder is not a breeder is not a breeder" and that the breed clubs and their members do not stand shoulder to shoulder with the byb or pet millers. PETAphiles in Ca and elsewhere constantly scream that there is no difference between a disease and death infested 1000 dog puppy farm and you and I.
Ironically the laws they try to pass such as AB1634 give FREE PASS to USDA "breeders". AKCs dependence on large scale breeder registrations is one reason we are forming independent advocacy groups in California, so that a wide range of canine and pet interests from pet owners to sportsmen, service dog breeders and show folks so that we can work for sensible laws and regulations. And we are actively proposing alternatives to punitive laws that are proven failures.
Since the early 90s, California has been under siege. California breeders have been under close scrutiny from within their own clubs to not breed often, to cut down on dogs etc... the end result of which has been a resurgence of pet stores selling puppies (almost gone by the late 80s) and a flood of dogs into the state from brokers and pet stores because we have a shortage of the pets people want. We kept quiet and were apologetic as hell about the fact that we bred dogs while the shelters have pets needing homes.
All that it did was let the ARs convince everyone that we didn't care and let the puppymills and foreign importers flourish here. The ARs don't care if we rescue, they don't care if we have codes of ethics and regrettably, our silence has let them get a big toe hold on public opinion. They just want to stop everyone breeding and hobbyists are the easiest "soft" target. They don't go after the USDA mills because they are protected by some very powerful lobbies, but WE are a "soft" target. Keeping quiet has not been an effective strategy in California. Most of our folks with political know-how agree that we should have started fighting back at least a decade ago, we are going to have to work hard to educate the public about responsible breeding.
After the last year of "excitement" here in Ca, we are seeing a gradual opening up of the media to our side. They are starting to seek out our representatives for opinions instead of just swallowing what PETA or HSUS have to say. And were starting to see the public respond positively as well.
And frankly, I think this latest PETA campaign will backfire. About 5 years ago they did a traveling show comparing farming to the Holocaust and it did not play well to the public. The 97% kill rate at PETA's shelter has made national news as well. This campaign is insulting also to the millions of pet owners who chose a purebred dog or grew up with one or even just like certain breeds. The more they are forced to show their true stripes, the more the p[ublic realizes how radical the agenda they promote is too.
Don't want to argue. I'd really love to not have to deal with any of this stuff. I spend 2-3 hours a day on this stuff right now. I know things now that would depress the hell out of me if I did not have such admiration for some of the people working in the forefront and behind the scenes to preserve our right to keep our dogs. I am in constant contact with people with far more government credentials that I ever thought I'd meet just because of dogs! We do need to draw a line between us and the irresponsible folks out there, but letting the ARs put us to sleep with these laws in the mean time makes no sense to me.
Re: PETA compares AKC to KKK
right now, we are allied with puppy mills, auctions and back yard breeders, like it or not. As long as it is THEM (PETA) vs US we will loose. PETA has the sympathy of the public. As long as we fight, we WILL look like part of the reason so many dogs die in shelters.
I really think we are taking the wrong approach..

Re: PETA compares AKC to KKK
They are Barking up the wrong tree again I see... How about when the dog auctions are going on? How about taking camp out in front of some of the puppy mills? They are all nuts!! They wont be happy until all dogs are gone. I hope they don't start showing up at dog shows again.. What a pain that was..

We Need Celebrity Spokespeople
PETA has long taken advantage of celebrities to put a familiar face and legitimacy to their cause. Ok, we need to do the same. Today Martha Stewart had an all-dog show, with every member of the audience attending with their dog.(Funny aside, all were well-behaved, except her two Frenchies, who barked constantly and finally had to be banished from the stage. Too funny!!) Anyway, she's pro-purebred, Oprah is pro-purebred, Bill Cosby is, and so on. How about a campaign to find and recruit some celebrities who will be willing to step up and take up our cause publically? How about a 6-degrees of Kevin Bacon-type thing here? Who knows someone who knows someone...you get the idea. I seem to remember that Lassie and Timmy made an appearance at the California hearings last year and helped stall the bill. I don't personally have any connections to celebrities, but maybe someone else does. What do y'all think?
