On Monday August 6, Rep Dan Boren will hold a "town meeting" to hear from voters on the issues they care about.
Rep. Boren was one of the Oklahoma legislators who voted against HR 137, the Animal Fighting Enforcement Act, earlier this year. The act passed by a wide margin and was signed into law by President Bush. This law was necessary to halt animal fighting operations like the ones recently in the news.
A group of concerned citizens plan to attend this meeting to politely share our views on the importance of animal friendly legislation and to ask why an elected official would support continued leniency on the matter of animal fighting, a problem that is reported throughout our state.
The meeting will be at Rogers State University, Stratton Taylor Library, in the Bird Room on the third floor, from 9am to 10:30
HR 137 is posted below:
H.R. 137 Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act- PASSED
Sponsor: Daniel Akaka (D-HI)
Purpose: This bill amends the Animal Welfare Act to prohibit the sale, purchase, transportation, or delivery of dogs and other animals in interstate or foreign commerce where the animals will be used for fighting. The bill prohibits the sale, purchase, transportation, or delivery in interstate or foreign commerce of any knife, gaff, or other sharp instrument used in a bird-fighting venture. In addition, this bill increases the imprisonment penalty for animal fighting violations from one year to three years and revises enforcement provisions.
Thanks for the heads up!
Please report back to us and let us know how it goes.
Thanks again,
Ward
