HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) - Democrat Barack Obama says he won't just be a president for the American people, but the animals too.
"What about animal rights?" a woman shouted out during the candidate's town hall meeting outside Las Vegas Wednesday after he discussed issues that relate more to humans, like war, health care and the economy.
Obama responded that he cares about animal rights very much, "not only because I have a 9-year-old and 6-year-old who want a dog." He said he sponsored a bill to prevent horse slaughter in the Illinois state Senate and has been repeatedly endorsed by the Humane Society.
"I think how we treat our animals reflects how we treat each other," he said. "And it's very important that we have a president who is mindful of the cruelty that is perpetrated on animals."

I think this is a big cause for concern!
excellent point, Jennifer
Local politics and policies trickle UP, even though most of us view politics as trickle down. We all need to work with our local and state elected officials to make sure they understand what AR really means to their constituents.

Re: Obama Supports AR
I think you'll find this is pretty much a canned response from all the Democrats. At least he didn't endorse PETA. Kuicinich (sp?) however, is truly AR minded and thinks PETA etc... are all hunky-dorey. No doubt we'll hear something similar to Obama's statements (which are pretty generic) from Hillary a some point, particulary as they all court California. Betcha a bundle they won't say it in the plains states though!
Dems are running scared from/and courting, the Green Party and it's voters for whom AR is a part of the platform. They are all going to say the sound bites that they think/know the public /special interests want to hear.
I doubt any of the leading contenders knows what AR vs. Animal Welfare is really about, if Obama did he would not have said that his 6 year old wants a dog! No dogs for kids in the hard core AR camps. For most of America, animal rights and animal welfare seem like the same idea on the surface. We know better because of our animal involvement. Most folks are more concerned with other aspects of life and don't do the research
Whoever gets in power will need to keep agriculture and the bulk of the US citizenry from becoming alienated, and frankly the President is not my big concern,
ALL politics is local. National policy, even state level legislation, is far easier to fight and defeat than all the legislation popping up in our hometowns!
WE need to do a far better job educating politicians about mainstream animal welfare and the ultimate, real agenda of the extremists, right now HSUS is who is teaching them, and the public, their definition of animal welfare. We need to get the word out what AR is really all about. That's OUR job for the next 4 years
