New to showing

Hi everyone,
I'm new to showing and I have a 4 month old. I am considering showing her in Oct when she is 6 months. Should I take her out at 6 months or hold off? I really need the experience in the ring and it's close to home.
This is her at about 4 months.

Thanks

Shelley - Mocha N Stella

I'd bye one!

and I bet I could sell a lot more...maybe as a fund raiser! LOL

Thanks Everyone

I am showing as a hobby so I hope to keep it fun. I will be showing in Eastern Canada and then hopefully some down the eastern US coast. I missed watching dog shows from when I lived in Virginia and thought the best way for me to get back to them was to get a dog... plus the added benefits of the travelling. I will definitely be back for more advice later on and keep you posted on how we do. Thanks for all the positive feedback.

nice looking kid

keep it fun, remember always this is fun first and formost.

I was starting to get very stressed about HOlly's first show, Jay said to just relax and have fun, dont go in expecting to win. It was her first 2 points.

I forgot at the end to keep it fun and relax and it took a year to get her last few singles, when i relaxed she finished in a few shows.

Early Experiences

I was going to say that the first dog that I started showing with ever is a dog that I still have that is 9 years old now and I showed him for over a year and put one Reserve Winners Dog (and I was just thrilled!) on him BUT the experiences were invaluable.

Experience and FUN

Shelley,

Starting them out young is a good thing IF you remember to always keep in FUN for her and for yourself. Local conformation handling classes are great to attend (and usually much cheaper than entering a dog show) and learn from. If you've never been to one, sometimes the instructors can be overbearing but keep it fun and try to understand why they're telling you this or that. Getting your baby out to as many places and meeting as many people as possible, while always keeping it fun, is invaluable.

Good luck!

Jay

Nice baby to start out with...

I often show my babies just to get them used to the shows and the sights and sounds and judges and ramps...I love specialties for that b/c of sweepstakes classes...puppies against puppies only and then they get to go in the ring again in regular classes too...2 times in one day...great experience for the pup and for you ... specialties usually have a lot of folks who have 'been around for a while' and know bullies...I am sure you will learn a ton!!!
Good luck with your lovely young lady!

Pretty Girl....

I would start showing her at 6 months...you don't have anything to lose...adn the earlier you get her out there...both you and her will become more comfortable with the ring and showing. Good Luck...and keep us posted.

Welcome

She's a pretty girl, get her out there! I started with my first Bully 2 years ago when he turned 6 months old. We didn't take any points until 12-18 class but the learning you get can not be bought. The people you meet, judges you show under, exhibitors you compete against weekend after weekend is such an incredible experience, so much fun and good times, win or no win! Handling classes and obedience are an excellent place to start, then bring it in the ring! By the way... nice job stacking her!

Thanks Kelly

I have been debating entering as she's a little awkward at the moment but who knows what 2 months will bring. Could be worse, could be better! She's my experimental show dog anyway! LOL

Shelly

I would take her out at 6 months.. That way the 2 of you can get some experience other than handling class..Good Luck with her!!

Hey Kristie

We have been going to handling classes and she's doing okay, I'm learning lots from the others in my dog club. I think I will enter her in the show in October, just hope she grows into those legs! Thanks for the vote of confidence!

good lookin lady.......

If you are looking for experience, start at 6 months......it takes awhile to take in the whole show world, you will find every experience in the ring presents new challenges.....with your dog, the other dogs, the human competitors, the judge....etc. The more you go the more you learn, plus.....you cant win if you dont enter!
Have a great time, welcome to the show world.

**Handling and obed classes are great too, they teach you how to train your pup and they teach the pup that the two of you are a team.

Looks like you've got a lovely little girl to start off with!

She's very pretty What is her breeding?

Yes

Hey - why not. If you have a show that's close to you, take advantage of it. Try to take some conformation classes first if there are some in your area.

You should also try to get some experience with the ramp before you get in the ring.

Good Luck!

Re: New to showing

I would go and take her and enter the puppy match if you don't think she is ready. She needs to get out as much as possible so she can get used to the surroundings.
