Nationals

My husband (Calvin) and I are the chairs for the upcoming BCA National show week. Recently several posts made statements that I would like to address. First regarding dates chosen for the event...The SOP for BCA requires the National show to be run by the "National Show Guidelines". These are worked on and updated by the "BCA Guidelines Committee" any change must be approved by a vote of the Councilors at the Council meeting held annually at the National show. In the Guidelines, we are asked to try and have the show NOT on Thanksgiving. Many show committees are unable to comply because of availabilty and cost but if you can book other than Thanksgiving...you should. Our hotel could accomidate us, so our show is the first week of October. I feel that it is a good time for our show because November in our area could be problematic for people traveling with dogs. (Snow cancellations of flights etc) The average temperature the week of our show is 60 degrees.(very comfortable for the dogs)

Second Spokane is the largest city between Minneapolis and Seattle. It has an international airport and indeed; we already have guests arriving from England, The Netherlands, Austraila, South America and Mexico. The hotel is offering free shuttle service to the hotel. We have some guests including Darlene Studeman coming in by train. There is a major highway and we have motorhomes coming in clear from the east coast that have already made their reservations.

As far as it being "the smallest show in 20 years" I don't think so. Our room block is almost completly filled (98%...most shows hope for 80%) We had to arrange for the overspill of members who have waited to the last minute to get their reservations, to stay at the other Red Lion down the road with shuttle service between the two (1/4- 1/2 mile) and the hotel graciously accomedated us.

It is a beautiful venue beside a 100 acre park with the Spokane falls right beside us. The park is dog friendly so your dogs will get some quality time while at Nationals as well.

As far as the "Novice" opinions about the show lasting a week...This is a very large and Prestigious show and brings a huge entry. When there are that many dogs sometimes the Judge has to split classes to give each dog it's due. This lengthens the day and in fact the National Specialty takes 3 days itself...the first day is Performance sports, Juniors, and Sweepstakes, the second is dogs and bitches and the 3rd is intersex. This is then followed by the division show which takes two days, and the Host Club show after that. There are committee meetings, educatioanl classes, the Banquet, inductees to the Hall of Fame, the National Gallery and more! It is a huge event and many of the best dogs in the country will be here.

To be sure there were some issues with this show as there are at every show, but there is also a group of people who have moved forward and who consider it an honor to host the National Specialty in our division. They have been working very hard to make this a wonderful event for both you and your dogs. Please feel free to contact me direct if you have questions about the show rather than allow supposition on your part to misdirect the members of this forum. I am more than happy to help with any confusion. We hope to see you all at this years show!

Kudos to you Sharon

For all your hard work. I can't wait to go to Nationals!!

Thanks for the encouragement

I guess I just don't understand why some people constantly feel the need to try and start problems. In my mind the purpose of a club or organization (or group) is so that like-minded individuals with common interests come together, and work together to enjoy fellowship and promote their interests. I hate all the sniping and one-upsmanship that goes back and forth like some kind of giant tug of war between factions. Can't we just love our breed, enjoy the company of others that do the same, support and encourage one another etc...instead of fighting, constant comparisons and bad sportsmanship? I hope so.
Thanks again a kind word is always good medicine!

Weather...

...that is definitely a wise consideration! I know it would have been a hair-raising trip over the mountain passes had the show been scheduled for Thanksgiving week. Plus--I've always thought it was a bad time since it's a huge family time for our family Looking forward to being there for a couple days this time!

Re: Nationals

Who said I did not respect his opinion??? Please do not put things in the message that were never intended. Skip refered to his opinions himself as "novice" and I believed that quite possibly he was either newer to the sport or just recently became more activly involved. I believed that he might not know all that is involved in the "Nationals week". Based on HIS statement that his opinion might be "Novice"; I then attempted to explain what we have been up against so that he and possibly others who also may not understand, would be able to. Those who know me, know very well that I not only respect the opinions of others, I can often be counted on to champion them. Skip responded after my post and did not seem in the least offended by what was said. If any offence was taken I apologize. I do not know who you are, or why you would want to 'pitch darts in the dark' at me. You should get to know a person...perhaps even work WITH them before assuming you know their thoughts or motives.

Randy

Who are you and how long have you been showing bulldogs?

Re: Nationals

Sharon

Read your opinion on the upcoming Nats and I have a question for you.
What do you consider a "Novice"? Your reference is as follows:

As far as the "Novice" opinions about the show lasting a week...

All opinions Sharon are worthy and should be respected regardless of your inability to look at all sides of an opinion and appreciate it.
Skip expressed an opinion that many come up with every year....many old timers still question the need for all the expensive bells & whistles...far from a novice opinion but then again you have been involved in the breed for how many years?

Randy

Train...

I have been wondering about train travel with a dog as well. Let us know if you can!

Re: Train!

Darlene is not bringing a dog this time. I called Amtrac for you and they unfortunatly no longer transport animals. This would still be a good venue for those coming as spectators or to attend meetings though!
Sharon

Train!

Darlene is taking the train? Now that sounds like fun. Can you bring dogs on a train? I never even thought about that method of dog show transportation.

Sounds like this year's show is in a scenic location, and I am sure fun will be had by all.

Sounds to me like a great show coming up!!

i know it will be a great one!!!

Looking forward to a Great Nationals

Sharon,
We are excitedly looking forward to our first visit to the Northwest part of the United States!
Knowing what you and the show committee have done and will continue to do throughout the show week, you should be commended for the efforts you and the committee have made. Again, we are excited at the chance to attend the BCA Nationals in Spokane, Washington!
We'll see you in a little over a month!

THis time of year the leaves will be changing

OMG it should be a very beautyful trip. My grandma takes the train from Seattle to SouthDakota yearly and just loves it. It doesnt take long, they take good care of you and you get to see parts of the country from a different perspective.

I would bring binoculars.
