kennel blindness ?

Okay, I have a question.. Not being able to recognize when your dog is fat. Do you think that is a type of kennel blindness? Last weekend I had several breeders and even breeder/judges tell me my dog(s) are too fat... I even had a breeder tell me while I was in the ring and he was standing outside the ring that my dog was fat. I didn't get mad, but felt more like they were trying to be helpful.. To be honest I couldn't see it.. On the last day I sat ring-side while my wife showed. From that perspective I could finally see what people were talking about..Why did it take a dozen people to tell me that before I opened my eyes?lol

This was from a few weeks ago - In Belles defense, I think she's the type of dog ( deep chest) that even a little weight will make her look huge..

Feeding birds - too funny Vicky!

who needs kids when you have men around the house.....sorry guys! LOL

flbulldogmom's picture

too funny! once I thought I out smarted him....by buying smaller

then I caught him giving her 3 and 4 at a time, his excuse "because they were small"!! well duh, that was the whole point!! gotta love'em - LOL

No offence but that dog is definitely overweight

best thing to to do is try and stay as close to the standard weight as possible and yes I do believe its a form of kennel blindness and we all have it to some degree but you have to try and recognise your dogs faults so that you can learn to compensate for them in the ring!

For example my boy is a little straight in the stifle so i have to move him agt exactly the right pace otherwise he doesn't obtain the correct roll

my brother is the treat feeder

we have puppy cookies for the Chihuahua, i cought him throwing handfulls on the floor the other day. Like he was feeding the birds.

Yes, you definately have to take into consideration all they eat

Dixie is only fed a half cup of Reduced Fat Evo, with one scoop of K9 show stopper supplement - and that's once a day!!

Which doesn't sound like much, but when you take into consideration her treats, handouts and training treats it all adds up to a 61 lb bulldog who trains a minimum of 3 nights a week in agility and upper level obedience plus does the treadmill on her off nights. LOL

show stopper

I need to look in on that.. I hear all kinds of good stuff.. I didn't know it adds weight thou..

Re: I dont think she is FAT but might need to tighten up a bit

winter sucks.. Kim and I do walk the dogs, but in the winter it's very rare...

Re: Bulldog weight

Yes, she did have pups not long ago.. I'm sure that has a little to do with it..

Re: I don't think

"on a diet"

Hey Deb, my wife yells at me all the time because I use so many treats.. I only feed them 2 cups a day, but I can use a bag of treats in three or four days..lol

Re: I disagree

This picture is a little deceiving.

tammy

It was nice meeting you as well.. We were very impressed with how well your pup minded you..

yep-

I agree, but it will have to wait until we have some decent weather..

My husband is a treat giver

But they only get a couple a day.

Ester is on 3/4 C in the am and 1 C evening with a small handful of chicken chunks. Poor MacKenzie is on 1 C and still fat. Cleo is skinny but I bet since her show career is over and she got spayed she'll get fat.

Not Kennel Blindness...

Weight is the hardest thing for me to evaluate when showing a dog. I see them everday and a weight change for the better or worse can be hard to catch.
The best way I have found to check this weight issue out is to take my dog into another environment-Park, Petsmart etc. I definitely get a different perspective when I see my dog in a different unfamiliar place, this definitely helps the weight problem!

Re: kennel blindness ?

I think she looks awesome!!

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away.

Hey Rod..

it was nice meeting you both this weekend... I have one I can't keep weight on!!! By the way I did not view the dogs you had this weekend as fat!!

Re: kennel blindness ?

she is a bit overweight and definately out of condition. Walk her more and she will loose that chub. That extra chest is not attractive because it is not pure substance, it is fat, and her hind legs have no tone to them.
You will be nicely surprised what a month of quality roadwork will do for her.

I disagree

she is too fat
Cindy

Sounds like Ester

Vicky said she looks fine standing but when she moves she looks fat

I think the key is toning up. Walking and some small hills should do the trick. Just what I need too

I don't think

she looks fat in this picture. I think when a dog has as much brisket and rib as she does then it can tend to look like they are too fat.

I also think you have to stand back and look and a comparison to what is in the ring helps.

I have 1 that is too fat and she is also deep brisket, rib and forechest. She's on a diet and walking.

Bulldog weight

well I guess I have the same illness then....I don't think Belle looks fat. If she were fat wouldn't she be more round all over.....plus, didn't she have pups not too long ago? that's got to do something to the way their body weight is distributed both before and after

I get the same thing with Dixie, but then again, it's from friends I show & train obedience with. I tend to think they just are not used to seeing a bulldog, Dixie is built a lot different than their labs or sheltie

I have to agree

she does not look fat in the picture. She has a very deep chest but a great tuck up. I'm on the opposite spectrum though.... I have people telling me that I should put more weight on my dogs at the shows. Most of the dogs in New England are very round. I like to see a pronounced pear shape.

I dont think she is FAT but might need to tighten up a bit

Also, i dont think people know what to think when they see a dog with alot of rib. They also think they are short on leg.

Is she mushy? I dont think you should be able to feel the ribs to easy on a bulldog, they are not boxers.

I know mine could loose a few pounds. Its winter and they are like bears hybernating.

Wow I guess I better start cutting down on the

food too then. I can feel Vanna's ribs but not easily for sure. I guess I will find out for sure when I take Vanna to see her breeder next week. I'm sure she will tell me if she thinks I let her get to fat. Dusty looked perfect to me too so I guess I have the same "blindness".

I have the same problem

I don't notice how fat they are untill I get to a show and everyone tells me. My dogs are easy keepers and tend to gain weight quickly. I tried using the show stopper and they all looked like whales in 2 weeks.

correct" weight

Good question.. I'm the wrong person to ask thou.. To be honest, people say you should be able to feel the ribs easily, but with Bell you can.. I think in my particular case you can see her jiggle when she moves.. I think what I need to do tone her up with road work.. With Dusty thou, she just fat, end of story..lol

karenjo's picture

Ok Now I am curious

She looks deep bodied but not particularly fat to me. I thought that as long as she had a definite waist (which in that picture it appears she does) that She wouldn't be considered to fat. So what is the criteria you would use to judge "correct" weight?
