husband/wife judges

Do you like going to show weekends that have hubby/wife judging? Do you find they very often have the same taste in dogs or completely opposite?

I know it is cheaper for the club since they only have to get one room and the judges sometimes drive to the showsite together but personally I don't care much for it. i've always voted no if our club is thinking of doing it.

that happens a lot in performance

in obedience we have many husband & wife judges - I find that most couples are very pleasant and have a good time while they are judging - maybe they don't feel bad for being away from home since their spouse is with them too

I like it and there are quite a few couples I will seek out to show under because they are both so much fun

It depends on the judges, just as any judge line-up. Being married does not automatically indicate similar interpretation of the standard. I find it interesting when the true "genius of the operation" is exposed!
I remember one husband and wife pair who prided themselves on disagreeing! But this only came down to specials and usually they each had very legitimate points of view. They very often agreed on their class winners and placements, as you would expect from any decent judges. I learned quite a bit from listening to them bicker after a judging assignment!
Differences in judging should really only be splitting hairs and not complete opposites. If this happens, one of them needs to go back to school.

I don't get to tooo many shows these days so I will take what I can get, regardless of the relationships between judges, unless I find one half of the couple a total waste of time, but that too goes for any judge.

seminars

"If anyone gets a chance to go see a judges seminar (seminar where judges learn about each specific breed) - I would reccomend it. The teaching judges will share thEIr opinions at these - and it's very beneficial to hear".

This is what we have done at Nationals the last couple years, independant of the judges seminar.
Keep in mind if you do go to judges seminars.. the seminar is only as good as the person giving it. I have been to terrible ones as well as very good ones.

Bickering alone is good

I think that the conversation generated between husband/wife (or, pc: spouse and spouse) would be very beneficial - if, of course, you were privy to the conversation. For that reason alone, I think that having husband/wife combos is nice. Dollar-wise, not really sure it's really that much difference.

I wish the judges had to "explain" thier pics after each show - that ain't gonna happen anytime soon though. If anyone gets a chance to go see a judges seminar (seminar where judges learn about each specific breed) - I would reccomend it. The teaching judges will share thier opinions at these - and it's very beneficial to hear.

I personally have brought in couples

But, the registry I used to show in did not allow the sunday judge on the show grounds on the saturday. I haven't been to an akc show to know that yet
We would have to entertain one judge until the show was over.
I found the one spouse wouldn't want to know what their other half chose because they wanted to see if they were different after the fact. I've seen it generate quite the discussion between the two on the sunday afternoon.
It is cheaper on the hosting club and is nice for the couple too. Plus, they are both qualified to judge by the registry.

What's that have to do with anything?

I don't think being a husband and wife has much to do with judging. A person is judging a dog according to a standard, not according to what their spouse might pick or not pick!
In a big show, you might have several good dogs that are in your final lineup. 3rd or 4th might be the 1st place on the next day, regardless of whether the spouse or another person is judging that day.
Anyone that has been to a dog show and done "ringside judging" is aware that they can place the dogs from outside the ring. Do you always agree with your fellow spectators about what should or should not have won? I doubt it.

i have seen it both ways

some have the same taste others can not decide on what color socks to where let alone what the standard calls for.

Doestn bother me.

Re: husband/wife judges

I just showed to husband/wife judges. The wife (who knew the standard) lol put me up one day and the husband didn't.. I don't see anything wrong with it. I know that my wife and I don't always agree on who is the best, especially with pups.. Even thou I try to change her mind and make her see things my way, it end up being pointless.. I would think that if you could save your club money by using husband & wife, that would be a good thing..
