How do I find a handler?

Hello! How do I find a handler for shows? I am not quite sure where to look. I went to the AKC site, but nobody was that close to me (unless that does not matter...)

Thank you so much!!!

Thank you all!

I really appreciate all the help I have received here! I am even more excited to get started as soon as he gets here. He is coming with a championship from another country and I am thrilled to get him shown here in the US. I hope he speaks english!! lol!!!

You'll do fine !!

I was a nervous wreck when I started but I finished my first dog in 6 months all in bred by. You can do it !!

Start by taking 1 dog to the show so you can enjoy yourself. when you know more people and think you can handle it add another one and I'm sure other bulldoggers will help you.

everyone starts out somewhere

watch what goes on in the ring, pick up things from the people you are watching.

Most bulldogs are owner handled, very few are handled by handlers.

Can't believe somebody told you that

I bet you would do just fine with a little practice.

NY

I am in Upstate NY between Watertown and Syracuse. I had no idea bulldogs were mostly owner handled. I wanted to handle them myself, but someone laughed at me and told me that I would never win and that handling my own dogs is "bottom of the barrel."

I would love to do it myself, I will just have to learn how to handled having more than one dog at a show. Then again, if they are in different classes maybe I could do them all.

Thank you for your help! It is much appreciated!

have you tried

The professional handlers association. They have a website. Where are you located? Maybe someone on here can help you out. Bulldogs are mostly owner handled but there are times when all of us have needed an extra hand.

I live in the Northeast and we just jump in and help each other when needed. I had knee surgery and had 3 bulldog friends (Laurie, Nikki B. and Paula) helping me with Piper. She finished and I never got to put a single point on her myself. Now that I'm back in the ring I hope to repay the favor.

I'm sure most area's of the country are the same way. What about your breeder? They are usually happy to take them in for you. Best of luck. Deej

If I can do it...

ANYBODY CAN! I'd suggest getting a mentor, your breeder, a friend, someone who teaches handling classes, etc. It's hard at first just to figure out what's going on in the ring! But once you know the routine and when to be ready to enter, you can concentrate on showing the dog at his best. As for being told owner/handling is bottom of the barrel, phooey! Bullies have the highest owner/handled ratio of any breed. I'm having a ball, and I didn't start showing until I was in my 50's, so that thing about old dogs and new tricks doesn't apply to dogs or humans. I finished my first champion a couple of years ago and I'm getting close to finishing her son. Got the majors, just need 4 points. Good luck to you and enjoy the ride!
