Heavy Litter question

WE have been to the vet 4 times since she was bred!!!! We are on day 57 from the first breeding, she can no longer go up and down the two steps to go potty we are carrying her, we have had one previous litter she had two, just looking for a little insight is this normal to be so big??? is my question , I'm just getting nervous now.

RE: Heavy litter question

If at all possible, make her a make shift home in the basement and take her out the garage door. Get her on the same level as the grass, not as stressful for the baby. If you can see she is not getting ANY rest call your doctor. My prayers and thoughts are with you and wait to see her precious babies.

God Bless,
Lisa

good luck with your girl....

The last week is so very hard.

heavy litter question

make sure to watch her like a hawk. My girl gained 6lbs (48lbs when we breed her) and had 10 healthy puppies. She was 37" around her ribs the day she went in. She didn't eat the last couple of days and she wouldn't lay down, I had to prop pillows and blankets around her to rest her legs.

She never had any labored breathing, but did start whining right before I took her in, that is actually why I took her. Didn't seem right. So keep an eye on her. The last couple of days are tough.

Thanks all suggestions are appreciated

as she has never been this big, and I think I'm more nervous then she is lol

Re: Heavy Litter question

I had that issue with my last litter, my 53lb bitch was 70lbs and dragging on the ground. The best thing you can do is keep her comfortable. I know it is not ideal, but I would put a potty pad in her room so she doesnt have to do the stairs. My girl ended up with 8 big babies (she had had 6 her first litter.) Just remember you are in the home stretch! Make sure she doesnt have a lot of fluid on her (do her legs look larger than they should or do her back boobs look sort of transparent?) and just keep her comfortable. If you are worried, I would call and check in with your vet, at this point I am usually plotting temperature on a graph so I can see any drops (if you need one email me and I will send you one). Keep us posted!

Re: Heavy Litter question

Wow, I have had a couple bitches that have had large litters (9 puppies) and they were so stressfull..... If you are not doing this already I would say to feed several small meals of soaked food (so it doesn't expeand more in their stomach) a day, I have even done liguid diets at the end of pregnancies. I have rolled towels and placed pillows under them to lay on. When it gets to the point that they can't lay down and get a good block of sleep I think the bitch is in serious danger and the puppies may need to come out. I would really watch the breathing and the color of the gums. I hope everything turns out good for you!! Good luck and keep us updated.

she is eating very little, I make her steak last

night and cut it up and hand fed it to her, her activity is very low, she is usually a hyper girl non stop so this is very different for me, I carried her up to bed last night and about broke my back lol, she was 50 lbs when I bred her and now she is up to 65 lbs and her little boobs are almost hitting the ground,

I did the testing on monday the 25th

of june and bred her on the 26, 27 and 28 of june

sounds like she should have the puppies

any day, is she still eating? Keep her activity down. Did you do progesterone testing? If so when was she over 5 and then when did you breed.

I try to get to day 60 from the 2nd breeding with my girls.

If she follows the book the puppies are viable after day 56-57. the pred will help with lung development

she is on

day 57 of the first 56 of the second and 55 of the last she is a panter anyways but she can't get comfortable can't lay sit or like i said get up and down the steps and we only had two before so it was a piece of cake for her then her breathing seems okay at the moment and her temp is 99 I'm not letting her out of my sight but I have read horror stories on her and she is just big

ickytazz's picture

how many breedings did you do and what date is she on from

each breeding.

The last week is awful!

If she is having trouble breathing you have to choose to take the puppies early. If you need to take them early give a shot of prednisone the night before the puppies are going to be taken.
