Frustrated!

I'm new to showing and owning a bulldog, I have a 10 month old female who has only been in one show. The show we entered there was one other bulldog, a champion male...we lost happy.gif We then took best puppy in group though which was nice. Again I entered a show and there is only one other bulldog entered...a champion. Will I ever have a hope in )*#$ of beating it? Sorry, just ranting...wondering if anyone else has any tips for me. It would be nice to actually have some female bulldogs or non-champions to compete against to see if she would actually win!! I guess the practice is always good. Perhaps the champion will have a bad day! lol

This is what showing is all about

you can't expect somebody to keep their champion home because you can't beat it. One day when your girl is older she may very well beat the older titled dog, every dog gets their day in the sun.

2 Point "Major"

Tammy,

If I'm not mistaken, about a couple of years ago, the CKC made it so that a dog must win 2 points, at least once. Before that, you could literally go to 10 shows and earn one point at a time until you reached the total of 10, under 3 different judges. There isn't a time limit. Some will wait until their dog/bitch is truly mature before spending the time, effort and money on finishing it.

Therefore, it is possible to go to a 3 day show weekend and finish a dog there - 3 different judges. Your best bet at trying that would be the upcoming Lower Mainland Dog Fanciers weekend at the end of October in Abbotsford. Typically, they have a Group 6 Specialty (Non-Sporting) on Thursday and All-Breed shows Friday through Sunday. The Bulldog entries are usually larger than normal during this weekend. In the past, Bulldog fanciers used to support these shows with special prizes etc. Otherwise, you're limited to the smaller Bulldog entries on the Island, or in the Lower Mainland or in the Interior. The other large Bulldog entry show on the West Coast is typically the AKC (Alberta Kennel Club) shows at the beginning of August in Calgary.

You should really try and show your dog yourself because it's simply just more rewarding when you do. That's how I feel about my own dogs. Also, I don't think I can make the Lower Mainlands as I can't afford to miss too many weekends down here this year.

Good luck!

Jay

Sorry, one more question....

In reading this does that mean a dog in Canada can earn 10 points over lets say 2 years and be considered a champion regardless of how many shows they earned the points at? From reading other posts in the US they have to win at least two majors correct? Does that not apply in Canada?

Hope my question made sense.

Thanks,
Tammy

Thanks!

Yes, thank you that helped. I appreciate all of the advice I get from these boards. I don't want people to think I was frustrated about points, I was just hoping to see more bulldog entries that were non-champions. It's hard enough going to a show when you are so new but when the only other dog you are up against is a champion it makes it even harder! I think next year I will try to enter some shows closer to Vancouver BC with Kim happy.gif

Thanks again,
Tammy
PS - if you ever want to come to a show Jay and take over for me feel free! happy.gif

Canadian Kennel Club Point Schedule

Tammy,

Below is the CKC point schedule that applies to every CKC show in Canada, regardless of the area. It's typically found in each of the Premium Lists and the show Catalogues, usually within the first several pages of each. Because I copied and pasted it, the alignment is off but you can follow what it says for the number of dogs competing and the subsequent number of Championship points that may be earned.

I looked up the Judging Schedule (Judging Program) for the Skaha Kennel Club shows that you're entered in and it does mean that one class dog and one class bitch are entered. If you both show up, unless the judge withholds ribbons, then there will be at least one point to be earned. Note, in Canada, even if a dog is excused for say limping, it is still counted towards a dog defeated (dog "indirectly defeated"). One of you will be Best of Winners and Best of Breed. And of course, in Canada, as the schedule states, you can also have an oppportunity to earn Championship points should you place in the Group, again depending on how many dogs competed in the Group.

I hope this helps.

may be talking about 'class' rather than 'group'?

I am fairly new to showing and still haven't figured out what everything is called!
I just figured out what a 'special' is!!! LOL

I've been showing my male for 2 yrs and he still needs

his majors-if you get frustrated after 2 shows you will be crazy in 2 yrs LOL......get out there and have fun....my male I am currently showing is the easiest dog to show, he enjoys being out there, until its his turn on the ramp or if he's already been on the ramp he flops down and relaxes-temperament to die for. I know one day he will finish and I will miss showing him because he is such a joy to show. So for now ENJOY yourself and enjoy being with your dog. Have someone video tape the show-study the special and the person handling the dog-learn from them.
Also take into consideration the special that is winning is also probably a more mature dog and has had time to develop and learn. The longer you show the more relaxed and at ease you get and that is obvious in the way you handle your dog and how your dog handles for you. If you are stressed, the dog is stressed, that runs right down the lead.
I'm sure others on here will have more advice....take a chill pill-if your dog is nice he/she will finish. When I first got in this a friend told me "Every dog has his day." I try to remember that everytime I get frustrated.
Good luck.

To those who understand no explanation is needed. To those who don't no explanation is possible.

I think you are right

Yes, the show is in Osoyoos BC and it does say if there are two dogs and you win your group (which I assume is breed) you get one point. I'm pretty scared now! lol

Tammy

Where are you showing?...

Points awarded are different in Canada and the States. If I remember correctly you are in BC are you not? So I think that 1-1-0-0 would be one point for BOB that day. I could be wrong, but I believe thats how it is. happy.gif Hope this helps.

Thanks!

Well that sucks happy.gif I thought if there were two dogs and you won you would get one point. I guess I read the point schedule wrong. At least I have a chance that the other dog isn't already a champion happy.gif

Re: Wait, maybe I made a mistake...

That means one male class dog and one female class bitch, no specials (champions). However with there only being one of each sex, there will still be no points awarded.

Wait, maybe I made a mistake...

ok, again...new to this but perhaps I made an error, it says ;

Bulldog 1-1-0-0 so does that mean the other dog entered is just a regular male bully with no title?

Thanks for the help.
