CAA Book Club 2007-2008

Come join us as we read about and discuss the latest issues surrounding animal protection! We are starting our 2007-2008 book club with, The Way We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter by Peter Singer & Jim Mason. In their new book, Singer and Mason explore the ethics of eating as they examine the dietary habits of three families and the motivation behind their food choices. The book explores the the treatment of factory farm animals , as well as the environmental and economic impact of food production. Publishers Weekly describes it as "a no-holds-barred treatise on ethical consumption," and "an important read for those concerned with the long, frightening trip between farm and plate".
Please RSVP with Suzy at suzy@exploreveg.org if you would like to join the club, get info on monthly meeting dates, and find out where you can buy or loan out the books!
If you are interested in joining the book club, please start reading The Way We Eat at your earliest convenience, as we will be discussing the book at our first meeting. Information below.
What: First Book Club Meeting: The Way We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter

Warped Tour Leafleting Review

Over the last two weeks, Compassionate Action for Animals volunteers took action in the most important concert leafleting event of the year by distributing over ten thousand "Even if You Like Meat..." pamphlets to attendees of the Warped Tour. One of the biggest music festivals around, the Warped Tour is a unique leafleting opportunity because of its size and demographic. The thousands of attendees at the festival are primarily younger people, ages 16-25, and are one of the most likely demographics to be open to making personal dietary changes on the basis of ethics.
The leafleting started in Minneapolis at the Metrodome at the end of July. Seven CAA volunteers were on the scene leafleting at different times throughout the day. After handing leaflets to two women, CAA volunteer Ben Acaso saw one of the women turn to the other and say, "This is the pamphlet that changed my life." Many others thanked us for being out there and handing out the literature, and a total of 6,000 leaflets were distributed.
Just a few days later, Ben and Claire Livingston made a road trip to Milwaukee to hit the tour's next stop. They were joined by two former CAA volunteers who now live in Milwaukee, and together distributed a whopping 4,500 pamphlets! Again, the pamphlets were well-received, and many people were supportive.
CAA will be doing more concert leafleting all year round, as well as college leafleting this fall when the school year starts up. If you would like to help out with this highly effective form of activism, please contact us at volunteer@ExploreVeg.org and check out some of the upcoming opportunities.
Supervalu Cruelty: Take Action

Minnesota-based Supervalu is the nation's third-largest grocery company, with nearly 2,500 stores and several major grocery chains, including Albertsons, Shaw's, and Acme Markets. Despite numerous discussions with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Supervalu's executives have thus far refused to take meaningful steps to reduce the suffering of the animals who are abused and killed for their stores.
Other major players in the food industry, including Supervalu's competitors Safeway and Whole Foods, are taking important steps to improve the conditions of the animals used for the flesh and eggs they sell. These---and many other---companies also refuse to sell foie gras, which has been banned in California, Chicago, and 15 countries.
Please take a few seconds to tell Supervalu's executives to follow the lead of Whole Foods, Safeway, and others and start improving the lives and deaths of the animals killed for its stores and also to stop selling foie gras. Click here to learn more about the issue and send your comments to Supervalu.
