demodex

would you breed from a dog who had mild case of puppy demodex?
Many say to fix.. Vet says its natural and many dogs have it? Is it okay to breed since it comes from mother?

What so you think?

I would say yes because...

Demodex is very strange. My Opal never got it but all 6 of her puppies got it. Mild puppy cases that were easily rectified.

One of those pups was bred and she had 5 puppies. I bought one of those pups and she did NOT get demodex.

I was very careful with her puppy shot schedule...4 weeks between shots and only 1 shot at a time...so that her immune system would not be compromised.

So..I say yes...it's OK to breed her.

depends...

if it were a one time localized case in a young dog/puppy and probable cause was related to the immune system suppressed due to stress...which can be caused by changing environments (moving to a new home), training, or a number of other reasons. Then yes, breeding would be okay.

If it were generalized and ongoing in an older dog, than NO, as it is probably genetic.

We recently experienced this with our 10 month Toller retriever. He had been away at field training; experienced the change of a home environment to a kennel and the additional training. He developed localized demodex on his muzzle. His was brought on by the stress of his new environment and training; however, if it were to continue to be an issue, we would look at the possibility of it being a genetic immune issue and if that were the case he should not be used in breeding. His cleared up quickly with Ivomectin and medicated shampoo.

All dogs have the mite on them it is when the immune system is c

problems develope. Dogs have these mites to keep the hair folicles clean and it is only when the immune system is low that these mites take over and create the problem of Demodex. A lot of the problem IMHO is due to stress in a pup which at 4 mo. is getting a new home, teething, final shots as with rabies shot given the same day as the last of the 3 baby shots. I always wait until the pup is at least 6 mo. for the rabies and find that the immune system seems to be OK at that point. If a male had Demodex as a pup and it was mild and cured I would not hesitate to breed to it.
We have these mites in our eyebrows and eyelashes also, natures way of keeping them clean.

just remember this

when you sell one of those puppies and it gets mange, be prepared to deal with the new owners.
Some owners and vets are very rational and reasonable about treatment. Others go ballistic and it can become a problem, even if it is "just puppy mange"

Be very specific and honest about the issue when you deal with the new owners.
