I've seen it done a million times but yesterday was a little different. The vet actually separated the sperm from the fluid by hand. Is this common? Don't they usually have to spin it?

this is what 2 different repro vets have told me personally. I know of someone if she shipped her male while leaving the prostatic fluid, the semen would not arrive very well at all. But if she spinned it down and took the p.f. off the semen would arrive in much better condition. I have not shown it making a difference with my dogs, as I collect and ship myself because my vet is an hour away. But I do try and collect as little p.f. as I can. I just recently had semen shipped in with plenty of the p.f. still there and my vet(is a repro vet) was not happy with the condition of the semen-swimming very slow. For the next shipment I had the owner have the vet remove the p.f. and the shipment arrived much, much better and my vet was happy. Lottie
"Actually, prostatic fluid can act like a spermacide to a small degree and it's best not to have to much of it in a shipment. At least that's what I've been told my 2 separate repro vets". Lottie

And that is how we normally do it too. But this was being shipped. I guess in the back of my mind I thought they would do it a whole different way.. I learn something new everyday..

I do this when collecting at home. U simply watch and don't want to collect much of the clear fluid. Some dogs it's easier because it's real easy to see the clear from the white semen, but with others it's much harder. In the old days, they used to tell u to collect for 15-20 minutes, and u would just be collecting a ton of prostatic fluid(which is not good when shipping semen). A normal bulldog will give u 1-2 cc's of semen and the rest is prostatic fluid. So, this is what your vet was doing, which is correct. Lottie

I was under the impression that the fluid acted only as a lubricant. So wouldn't the fluid for surgical implants or chilled semen be pointless? I understand how it would benefit if you were doing a AI with the bitch right there thou.. I don't know, is that right?
you are still throwing out sperm with a seperation, i dont like tossing the champions down the drain.

I know vets doing surgical implants like separation of fluid, simply because they only need to use the sperm-rich portion. I use the clear baby bottle liners and can see when it's time to switch. I have seen the equipment your vet has used before but have never used it myself. I don't separate when doing AI's because all the fluid would be used in a natural breeding (the best method)so therefore must be necessary in an artificial one too (right?). Elizabeth

I can try to be more specific. First of all it took two vets. They had three inserts. They collected the fluid switched the insert, colleted the semen, then switched for the rest. I don't know if the pinched it off in-between the stages or not. When I tried to question the method they were using, he reminded me of the number of years he has been doing this and also the success rate he has had. To be honest I was very impressed with how well it went. This was the first time I have used this vet. He normally does this type of thing for greyhounds. I think this may have been his first bulldog..

By hand? Can u be more specific? Or do u mean the vet watched the collection and when he noticed the prostatic fluid started, he stopped the collection? Spinning is the best, but some males don't need this done if they don't give much prostatic fluid. Lottie

I have heard this too but in looking around today find no evidence to back that up.

Hi Vicky-

2 cc's
2 cc's would be perfect. the uterus can only hold 2-2.5 cc's I've been told. So, why put in more and dilute the semen
shipping semen
Yes, and we managed to collect 2 cc's.. I just never seen it done before.. It's always been the whole ball of wax..
