Class entry question

Question from a newbie happy.gif My bulldog Teela turned 1 in September of this year. When entering confirmation it has a 12-18 month category. Is this still considered a puppy? Should I bother with that class or just go open dog from now on?

Thanks!
Tammy

12-18

12-18 is a JUNIOR class, not a puppy class and is not eligable for Best Puppy, but is for Best in Sweepstakes.

12-18 is a favorite class of mine and is often very competative at specialties.

We had extensive debate about that very question

,,,with our co-owners, and several others. They kept saying move her up to Open, as she would do well there. We having watched her every day of her show career, were abit kennel blind in the other direction, thinking she wasn't there yet. The debate ended when we entered her in 12-18 one day at a specialty, and Open on the next(she was 13 months old, I think). She placed 2nd in 12-18 and RWB in Open. Needless to say, we kept her in Open, and she got all her points in Open.

Perserverance isn't a long race.
It's a series of short races,
ran one after the other.

My understanding is

Anything under 18 months is puppy dog/bitch has been my understanding and what I have seen in the show catalogs.

I base my decision on the maturity of the dog......

if my dog is still puppiesh-meaning appearance or behavior I keep them in their age class so the judge understands this is still a young dog. Some judges do not like a dog misbehaving in open especially on the ramp when they are running their hands over the dog. My boy Butkus is 3 yrs old and still jumps up and plays around sometimes like a puppy-but unfortunately I have to put him in open or bred by depending on who's showing him and hope the judge has a sense of humor. To those who understand no explanation is needed. To those who don't no explanation is possible.

Re: Class entry question

12-18 is not considered a puppy for the purposes of Best Puppy, etc. It does give the judge the knowledge that this is not a mature dog, so it can help if Teela is less than mature at this point. There are some dogs that will do fine in open, but I like the 12-18 class. Good luck!
