calculating due dates?

it seems like there are lots of methods to calculate due dates. What method do you guys use?

for the fun of it... what day would you plan a tentative c-section for with the following info

Projesterone levels for blood drawn:
1/8 = 0.3
1/10 = .23
1/14 = 3.2

We bred on 1/16, 1/18, and 1/20 using fresh semen and she was still receptive at the end.

I have my idea, but want to see what others come up with.

Thanks

if she was not tested after 3 you have no way of knowing

if she ovulated so you can not count from the progesterone.

You will have to count from the breeding dates, watch for signs of labor....

I go 60 days from the 2nd breeding

she wasnt tested after the 3

I usually keep testing, but she wasnt at my house as we co-own her and I was out of the country on vacation.

what day did she hit 5??

We breed 2 days after they hit 5 and do the csection 61 days after the first breeding,..We seldom ever breed more than once..

Well think about it..

Holly was 2.4
2 days later 2.8
2 days later 5.2
1 day later 7.2
1 day later 11.7

So...basically 4 days later from the 2.4 she was a 5.2. Its just another way to prepare for shipments or if you cant get back to the vet for another progesterone test.
48 hrs after the 5.2 she was 11.7.

I have never heard of that, here is our progesterone levels on t

So we would have breed when she was 5.2. We usually go 5 then 2 days later which puts us about 11.7

2.4
2 days later 2.8
2 days later 5.2
1 day later 7.2
1 day later 11.7

Her breeding last year, we breed 2 days at 5.9 and 2 days later, we had 2 puppies. I think if we breed later we would have had more.

our does the same

I love it, it makes me feel safe about them not being premature. They use the actual number tests for breeding and the color dots for whelp timing. We also usally use Whelpwise which I LOVE as it monitors the mothers contractions, etc. We didnt use it the last time... I cant help but wonder if it would have given us the informatio to save Virginia.

A couple of us were discussing the due dates issue yesterday and I find it interesting the different methods and which seem to work best.

This particular bitch has missed in the past, even using fresh when we just did one or two breedings so she got an extra one at the tail end this time, and it seems to have worked. We dont know yet, but our fingers are crossed. Her mother did the same and proved to hold out just a bit longer than the textbooks call for.

My vet...

Wont do a section unless the progesterone level is below 2, that way he knows she is ready. Has always worked for my litters. Even had two litters at day 58 because the bitch was ready, and actually in early labor on one litter when we went for our progesterone test.

Target Tests

Curious what others plan for when using target tests for testing progesterone, since they do not give an exact number. One breeder told me that she counts 61 days after the target test goes clear for the c-section and has had success w/ this (no matter when the bitch was actually inseminated). Curious to see if anyone else uses target tests and what their schedule for the AI's/C is. Thanks!

I agree Dawn....

Artificial insemination using fresh chilled semen should be used for a 1-time breeding. Insemination should take place 4 days after the progesterone reaches the 2.5 ng/ml mark or 48 hours after the 5 ng/ml mark. Sperm in chilled semen survive 48-72 hours after insemination. With artificial insemination, the semen should be deposited into the cervix to increase the chance of it being drawn into the uterus.

We breed Holly 2 weeks ago

since we were doing surgical we needed to pinpoint when to breed.

She stalled for over a week, at 2-3 and then stalled again between 5-7

if we are doing progesterone we breed 2-3 days after 5.

most of the time we breed by vaginal slides and have a good track record.

Good luck!

she used traditional

assumptions that ovulation is about 2 days after projesterone levels hit 2 based on 2 coinciding with the LH surge.

If the ultrasound confirms pregnancy, then we know she ovulated, we just arent 100% certain if it happened on Tuesday which is my guess at this point.

It also leads to my questions as I have heard people count due dates off of assumed LH, Projesterone spikes, believed ovulation and then breeding days. ahh what fun.
