Our dog performance club once a year has our meeting at the farm of one of our members who is an avid herder. For our program we get to play at "herding" and have a lesson from the expert! ALL the dogs get to participate and once again THE BULLIES amazed the crowd!
Chubbs was initially quite taken with the smell of fresh sheep puckies upon entering the ring...Hey Chubby! Come on over and meet the sheep!
THEN, she caught on!
Would you look at that Chubby SheepDawg go!
Chubby got the sheep "warmed up" to the idea of Bully SheepDawgs, but then enter the Red & White Woolly Buster DeLUXE!
...RELEASE THE HOUNDS!!! Pip came right in and took over! (poor sheepies)
Head 'em up!
...move 'em OUT!
Of course no sheep trial would be complete without "Babe"...Ummm, I mean GABE!
(Hmmm. This one DOES resemble a certain porcine personality, doesn't he?)
WooHoOOO Sheepies!!!
...'at'll do Pig!
Our herding instructor commented as my three finished their turn, "I am contantly amazed at what these guys can do!" We may just take some lessons and get an official herding title on a bully one of these days! (...don't say I didn't warn you! )
That is so crazy..lol
Love it!
herding
not sure any dog can do it??? I've seen a shepard try and breed the sheep instead of herd them!! lol, I'm sure if a pack of bulldogs were UNtrained and in the pen all together instint may take over?? My 13 month old female has a herding fun run coming up and hope shes as good as her older brother!!! It seems bulldogs can be trained to do almost anything, with a sound mind and body!!! I loved the photo's thank you for posting them, looks like your guys enjoyed the day!!!!

They weren't aggressive...
but WERE on their little wooly tails chasing them!
I do know that the instructor was impressed by their response, but don't know that much about it yet.
They have a pretty strong prey drive...then they must learn to understand to go out around the animals--that can be taught at home with chairs, rake and treats or toys. The dog just have a good "down", "wait", "away to me" (go around in a counter-clockwise manner) "by the way" (short for "by the way of the clock" or clockwise) and walk up. They must be able to focus on the sheep--sometimes an obedience dog is so focused on the handler that you have to work with them to focus on the animals out there. I seriously think these guys could pull it off quite nicely...as the instructor said, "Any dog can do it!"

During training the handler uses a rake to direct the dog and teach it to move around and off the sheep, back up, wait, etc. One of the first important elements is that a dog show interest in the sheep--no problem with these bullies
That is awesome Cheryl!
How cool is that!

question
How fun! This is really neat.
Were the bulldogs aggressive towards the sheep or did they display any true herding instinct?
Thanks!
