Breeding better dogs

I read this article and it was helpful to those first starting out in Bulldogs. The fundamentals of breeding bulldogs are knowledge, work and luck. The more of the first breeder has.the less of the other two are needed. The reason individuals have for breeding bulldogs arerobably too many and too varied to consider here.but let us hope that a part of each is a sincere effort to better the breed. The initial step toward breeding bulldogs should be thorough knowledge of the Standard for excellence of type in the bulldog. This is necessary in evaluting the bitch, selecting the proper stud and grading the quality of the puppes. Conditioning the bitch is also important. It could well be that the condition of puppies depends on how the grandam was conditioned.

As I look around on the web I am always surprised

on what people find acceptable to breed from. There are a hell of a lot of pet quality Bulldogs being used for breeding which is sad IMO. There is only 1 reason to breed and that is for the betterment of the breed.

I also struggle to deal with how many dogs have never entered the show ring yet their owners feel they are worthy of being bred.
