I have been thinking about the sites I visit and how often there is a post about a bitch with no milk. The story goes on and next thing you know they are down to one puppy....or none
so with that being said...do you think that there are many out there who just do not realize how long it takes for milk to come in especially with a c-section? Its like humans..often 3-4 days...but as humans we still put that baby on the breast. Many mothers that I have helped often worry about the newborn getting enough to eat but when i show them my marble (the size of a newborns stomach) they are eased knowing that colostrum will satisfy the newborn....
now wouldnt it be just the same for these bullie bitches? Are people just getting impatient and not putting the pups on, and starting bottles etc? Are people not milking the nipples deep enought to help trigger the "let down" relex? Or is it that we have created a breed who just can no longer care and feed her pups? (if that is the case..I will add this to one of my questions I start asking breeders, "Do the bitches in your pedigree produce milk?"
Sounds sad...
yep marble size...but
only for a few days...then it goes to a boulder sized marble..and on up to the size of a fist...
feeding a newborn the breast whenever is fine. Its actually the best thing to do...no matter what formula companies say..its not as fatening as formula and well you know...
We are campaigning at the hospital to encourage more to breastfeed. its part of the 2010 US goals, decrease obesity.
We are seeing many moms formula feed and feed 3 oz at birth...then the infants stomach gets stretched out if they do not spit most of it back up...studies are finding that this is the start of our overweight children in the US.
anyway..thanks for your thoughts...
Give Brenn kisses 4 me!
I personally....
Have never had a bitch not produce milk. I agree as you say, its take 3-4 days for the milk to let down but up until the time my pups nurse only off of mom. What better way to get milk to come down?

Supply and demand...
I basically do the same with newborn pups....I dont set a time frame for them. When they cry I feed them. It may have only been an hour and a half, but I will still let them nurse when they demand. My bitches milk usually comes down within 48 hrs.
Great question
Ithink often there is something wrong with mom (parasites etc) that have been undiagnosed that can lead to a tax on mom's system and result in no milk. Ample access to water can be a factor...people are so scared they will have water pups they limit the bitches access to water and decrease her ability to produce colostrum and milk.
A marble sized stomach...really? With my son, I let him nurse as often as he wants. I call it Brennen's comcast (boobies on demand). Since this is not my first child, I knew when my milk was close to coming in. I let him nurse for about 40 mins total then offered him a bottle of formula. I just can't let a baby cry 24/7 because we are doing what we are supposed to and waiting for milk to come in. If they're hungry and you don't have the supply, you should offer the formula IMO. I do the same with puppies, they nurse for about 40 mins, then are offered the bottle. Some are starving for the formula, some don't want it. Either way, I feel better knowing they aren't hungry. BTW, my week old son eats an average of 3 oz per session. At day one he was eating 1/2 to 1 oz.
It's just weird
to think their stomachs are that small!!
Brennen was only given formula for about a day and a half...it was all he needed to get by. The 3 oz he gets now is all just milk. Interesting topic Rhiann
