About 13 years ago Boo Scully smacked me down for saying I had puppies out of a certain stud dog. Of course, I actually had puppies by a stud dog. I have noticed over the last few years an increasing trend for people to do the same thing when saying who their puppies parents are.....Sally X Fred. This would mean that you have puppies by Sally out of Fred. Unless Sally is a boy and Fred is a girl this is wrong. In all breedings pedigrees are written Male X Female. When I got out of college I was a sorghum breeder for Cargill Seeds. Even in plants it is written Male Line X Female Line. I realize that in 2009 it is a small point because we can figure out who you are talking about, maybe. But, it will be impossible in 2020 when people are looking at the Bulldogger and seeing Sally X Fred and not having any idea that it is written backwards.
it is interesting
maybe there bitch was unknown so decided to say the "well known dog". I sometimes refer to the bitch first.. but as out of, but arrange pedigree's in my head with stud on top bitch on bottom. I think horse background is wonderful, seems to train peoples eye for movement as well, when riding you can feel if somethings no quite right, then look for it... seems to go through the end of the lead as well? just a thought. interesting topic!
what I find really interesting is
That it is second nature to people from a horse background. I too recently encountered this at a show. I asked a fellow exhibitor who their dog was "Out of" and they replied with a well known studs name. lol I said no no.."out of" what bitch is this dog out of. They had never known that "out of" was the bitch and "by" is referring to the stud. Guess for us who started in horses it is just a given.

Re: Agree....It should be done correctly
That is the way I remember how it goes...Puppies are sired "by" the dog and they are "out" of the bitch...but people ask me all the time, "who is he/she out of?" and 99% of the time they are asking for the sire.
Agree....It should be done correctly
I was also a horse breeder/shower with National and World Champion horses and I never remember the "by" being used for a mare. It's really pretty easy to remember that "out of" means it came out of the mom. By = Sired by.
it's always Mr. and Mrs. Or Mr. and what ever
the men always come first.. LIKE IT OR NOT..hahahaha
I have trouble sending letters or to friends and saying her name first vs his, so i just say HI

I agree!
Brett, while this is a small thing, growing up breeding Thoroughbred horses, it was always by (enter sire name here) out of (enter mare's name here). When I was exposed to bulldogs, it doesn't seem to really matter... everyone seems to know who you're talking about LOL.
Good point.. one I've made to my husband several times, but after hearing several well established breeders say the same thing (in the backwards manner) I realized that it's not something everyone else is concerned with.
Good point!
