AKC Regarding Investigations & Complaints

After reading some of the posts last week about AKC and Kennel Inspections, Complaints, ect. I felt they were incorrect so I called and spoke to AKC in their Investigations Dept.
The following is the information regarding the guidelines they follow:

1. Kennel Inspections:
IF you breed over 7 litters a year, you may be inspected.
IF you have 20 to 25 transactions within a year, you may be inspected.
Any of the above can be viewed as excessive and they do raise a Red Flag. This does not mean that the person being investigated has committed an infraction but it is the limit AKC has a adopted as a Rule of Thumb.
You may be investigated at random depending on the time allotments of the Inspectors. They employ 15 and each covers roughly 3 states.

2. Complaints:
You Cannot pick up the phone and make a complaint. There is no Red Flag for this action. While it is always easier to blame others when a situation with AKC occurs, unless a written complaint is sent in that includes:

A. The senders information including name, address and phone number,
B. Proof that something has occurred that is against AKC Rules & Regulations and other Governing material or proof being obtained through a court of law in regards to AKC policy. If one has won a lawsuit against another exhibitor or club member then based on the Rules & Regulations and other Governing material, you can then file a complaint with AKC for action. Proof can be obtained in many other ways but with a court case, AKC will usually take action. You cannot make a charge without providing AKC proof that the infraction has occured.
C. The person you are reporting name, address and Phone Number.
Without this they WILL disregard your phone call and inform you of the above requirements.

3. Behavior at AKC Events
Many complaints occur in conjunction with an AKC event. These type of complaints must be given to the Show Secretary or Show Chairman during the event. You cannot later go back and attempt to lodge a complaint after the Show Secretary has filed her paperwork with AKC.

If all of the above is not included, AKC will take no action.
AKC will often give the person being investigated a copy of the original complaint.
This information is then investigated and if the person/kennel is in fact not adhering to the Rules & Regulations and other Governing material then this information is given to the Heads of that Dept. and they make the call as far as how the matter proceeds.
Be aware that anyone can file a complaint, not just the injured party.
For those who become angry when someone does file a complaint? No need to worry if your actions are in line with AKC Policy. If they are not? Then you have no one to blame other than yourself.
Anyone interested, and all should be, can go to the AKC website and read the Rules & Regulations and all other Governing material.

Best Regards,
Larry Grissom

Time of Need

Hi Karen,
That is terrible all the power outages. Hope Lyn's dogs are well. That was very nice of you to offer your help in time of need. I think bulldog people are great. My Alternator went out on my way to Fl. in my Excursion and I broke down at an exit that happened to be the exit to friends of mine that had a Fearless litter. They were great. Helped me get a tow, get the dogs safely to their house and just turned a nightmare into a pleasurable event. Got to see the pups, swim in the river they lived on. The kids had a blast.
Again it says allot about your character.....

Re: Thanks Larry

And that's what I am going to do too Skip, ask someone who knows! I like this type of talk though as I learn too. No one knows everything and it seems that there are many gray areas.
Larry

Thanks Larry

I would like to know the answer to that question. I am sure a lot of others would also. Sometimes I just think these things up and then I have to ask someone who will know.

Great Information Larry....Thanks for posting.

Re: Larry a question for you

A judge should have no interaction prior to the show with any exhibitors.
Is it an ethical violation? In my opinion yes.
Is it a rules violation? I "think" that would depend on the person(s) willing to file a complaint. I do not know how AKC would handle it to be honest Skip.
Have I seen it happen? I know I've see people talk to a judge before a show but not sure that I have seen them put the same person up for points or breed.
I will call AKC again tomorrow and ask.
Larry

Larry a question for you

If a person was showing to a particular judge and that same person was sitting for 30 minutes before the show mingling with the judge who was to be the judge to their dog. Just suppose that particular person was to win under the same judge that day about a hour later would that be a rule violation or just a ethics violation. I was just wondering, all hyothetical of course.

Re: Time of Need

Karen,

That is very nice of you to offer your help. That is a terrible situation with the power outages in parts of STL. My dad is out of power as well. You are such a giving person!

Re: good point

She spoke to You??? In person? You will have a hard time getting anyone to believe that! LOL Lyn never speaks to you.

Regarding #3 of AKC Investigations

I can verify that No. 3 is totally correct. If a complaint at a show has been lodged because of poor sportsmanship, bad conduct, AKC rule infranctions, and a bench committee is called, a trial is held during the event. All witnesses are sworn in and complaints are heard. The committee represents AKC for that day and that event. For the record, AKC's guidelines for this are:

If an action by an exhibitor or an incident takes place that is considered detrimental to a first time observer of a dog show and/or a first time exhibitor and would influence their future participation in the sport of showing dogs, it is an infranction of AKC's rules.

The show secretary may also include this in her show report even though it has not had a bench committee called. These reports are read by AKC, and copies of any and all reports of such are placed in the individuals files. I can remember many years ago a remark that was made by the judge who had just completed their assignment as a provisional judge. That remark was witnessed by myself along with two other very well respected AKC judges. The remark was included with my show report along with statements from the two judges that witnessed the incident. That provisional judge never got permanent judging status. Exhibitors beware, poor conduct at AKC events is not something you want in your record.

Motto, smile go to your room and make no nasty comments about dogs, the exhibtors or the judging, it can come back to haunt you and most times it should.

Lyn

good point

Ha, your right ! Yes it is better to keep it to yourself.
Just outside the ring at ourlast specialty, one of our fellow club members, you made a commemt to me about what was wrong with her bitch. It hurt her feelings but I told her you didn't mean anything by it, that is just the way you are.

Thanks Larry for posting this information.

Thanks again for posting this information. I am sure many people will find this helpful. This brings much clarity on how the process works.

weather

I heard there was some electric out. I'm glad Lyn's dogs are ok.
I'd been glad to help out if needed. Bulldoggers always pull together in crisis. Our hours here are so messed up with Richard been off work with his knee. He'll be going back to work soon enough. Maybe we will get out of those afternoon naps and back to normal hours. Maybe I need a glass of wine with you and Angie to get sleepy. But to keep it more dog related ......oops can't think of anything. Well I hope Lyn went and got a generator or something. She has neighbors that probably have electic. 1/3 of the city is out I just heard. It's cool outside currently so sleep will be easy. Tommorrow's a different story. I'd be happy to babysit a dog in need of A/C.

Re: Not I

Good to hear Karen.
The way your post was worded did cause concern but if it was not intended that way, then please accept my apology.....and hopefully Lyn will understand your posts better...
Deanna

Not I

Lyn and I have no issues. I have NEVER been in any arguement on this board with any one, ever. And I don't wish to be drawn into it please. So don't read anything into it.

Re: it's Ok

I should state that I responded to Karen's post as I knew that Lyn would not/could not as over 75,000 people are without power this evening due to one of the worst storms in St. Louis history. I spoke to her earlier in the evening as she and Bob worked to ensure the dogs would not be without air conditioning tomorrow when temps are due to go well over 100.

Re: it's Ok

Karen

Most are aware of the issues that you have regarding Lyn.
This is not the place to air your personal feelings. I don't care to see or hear it on a public board as I am sure others do not either.
There has been way to much of it lately and it has to stop if this board is ever going to get back to education.
By the way yes, her litter is beautiful but your insuinations are beneath you.
Deanna

it's Ok

It's Ok. You know very well Lyn and I spoke until recently since you are her close friend and co-owner. Lyn and I had a friendly email just today. As long as she is nice we speak. You can ask Peggy about the ringside chat, she is the bitch owner. Don't worry Peggy understands. Post more pictues of you guys' litter. I've never seen colors like that before. They are as beautiful as they are unusual. Sure to be show stoppers. It's a co-owner litter isn't it? Lyn and I understand each other perfectly. Lyn should know Peggy holds no hard feelings, so you didn't have to jump in for no reason. OK, Peace.

Larry - Thank you for taking the time

to set the record straight. Too much bad information, rumors, opinions, or whatever one wishes to call it get circulated and then those who don't read the rules or research same are misled with bad information.

Sorry you guys didn't get to stay for the remainder @ OKC and hope that all is well now.

It was great meeting you (again, sorry I forgot about the previous time... I'm a ditz--what can I say)

See you two down the road.
