Lloyd Levine held a PRESS EVENT IN LOS ANGELES this morning to announce that AB1634 will be back in January!! [from Sacramento Bee "Capitol Alert"] ... AM Alert: Restoring confidence... with Brown, Brulte, Burton and Wilson
Senate Democrats head off to Napa today for their annual policy and politics retreat. The one-day gathering has two topics on the agenda: the budget and the 2008 elections.
So much for the "year of education".
In the morning, Senate budget staff director Dianne Cummins will brief senators on "what the budget outlook is for next year and how it will affect everything we do," according to Alicia Trost, a spokeswoman for Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata.
After lunch, Sandi Polka, Perata's political strategist-in-chief, will talk elections and campaigns.
Then in the evening, the Democratic caucus hosts a fundraiser for the Voter Education and Registration Fund. That's the Senate-directed fund that spent $40,000 earlier this year pushing the recall of Republican Sen. Jeff Denham, following his refusal to vote for the budget.
Meanwhile, much to the chagrin of Capitol fax machines, Assemblyman Lloyd Levine, D-Van Nuys, ramps up for the 2008 version of his pet spay and neutering bill - aka the California Healthy Pets Act - with a Los Angeles press event.
The measure caused an uproar in 2007, with lines of impassioned pet owners stretching out the door at committee hearings. The bill, AB 1634, passed out of the Assembly but stalled in the Senate, where it will begin in 2008.
Finally, the Public Policy Institute of California hosts a conference today entitled "Restoring Confidence in the Legislature" at Sacramento's downtown Sheraton hotel.
The participants include former Speaker Willie Brown, current Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez, former GOP legislative leader Jim Brulte , former Gov. Pete Wilson and former Senate President Pro Tem John Burton.
