Arggggg! Soooo frustrated. I must be trying toooooo hard. I've watched 90% of you show your home grown puppies from Houston to Minneapolis and NY to Ca. How hard can it be? My poor Vet wouldn't even let me pay for the Ultra sounds today (I think she thought I was going to cry right there). 6 more months to their next heats, 9 weeks gestation, 6 months to the ring (at least). And that's only if i get something worth keeping. Gosh...That's what I told myself this spring when we didn't have any luck. At least I know why my Mentor told me to try and breed both my girls this Fall. Even doing all the tests and cultures, Progesterone Testing, Trans Cervical's with a specialist 2 hours away..... Nothing.... How long did it take most of you to get your 1st show puppy? Looks like I'll be able to make the Chicago Club's show and Nationals this year... Sounds dumb but I'd rather have a good reason to stay home. Sigh!!
Ovulation timing
Connie,
I know how frustrating it is to miss breedings. Especially when you feel like you've done everything right as far as timing goes.
Not only do I have my own Bully girls to deal with, but ovulation timing on difficult bitches is a big part of what I do for a living. And there are other tools, besides just progesterone results, that can help increase your odds.
Feel free to email me directly if you like and I can give you some ideas on testing options that might help.
Dan Bandy
I'm afraid to ask how long you've been trying ???
No... We are in the Midwest and had semen
shipped from NY and CA. Our Vet got a kick out of that. lol I'm sure I'll weather this but my poor 16 year old is sitting in the basement with the girls all bummed out. I'm hoping to take him to Nationals to cheer him up.
Feel your pain -
I've got a nice CH bitch who finished quickly over 18 months ago, (4 majors, 3 of them at Specialties) and haven't gotten her pregnant yet. We have done progesterone testing and our timing has been spot-on, fresh AI with a nearby dog who even though he is older is still very viable (his owner and I meet halfway to breed her), re-checked her Thyroid to be sure that wasn't the issue and have done the check for any infection. I've got show people wanting pups from her - do you think I can get her pregnant? NOOOOOOOO!
Re: 6 months later and 2 more negative Ultrasounds
I feel your pain. Infertility has put me so far behind. I have not had a bred by bitch champion since my Gypsy about 10 years ago.
I know it's hard to hear stick with it..but listen to the advise and stick with it.
Did you breed to a local dog?
Using fresh semen and have checked it everytime.
My breeders have been wonderful and encouraging! Just wait...be patient. Yea...I've even taken to showing Bostons for my Mentor just for the experience. 1st time out and I took WB out of the puppy class. My son showed her the second day and repeated it. His first question was whens our next show. I'm going to try and find him a puppy first and we can share till I find one for me. I'm so excited that he's interested I want to get him in the ring with his own dog. I think that the odds of conceiving are directly related to how bad you really want a litter. The worse you want it the worse the odds. If anyone has a stray special laying around they aren't using please feel free to send it our way:)
Unusual to have a miss with a TCI if the timing is right
and you are using fresh semen, I believe the success rate is over 90% well it is here anyway. We have bred 2 litters 18 months ago and I still don't have a puppy to show out of my kennel, I am doing a great job campaigning everyone elses kennels though lol

We did cultures on both 2 months prior to their Heats
and again 30 days prior. The put them both on a Bayatryl flush for the 1st 7 days of their heat cycles. I had a lot of good advice this spring about the pit falls so I thought I over compensated but no luck.... Everyone told me that Bulldogs were heart breaking to raise I just never guessed it would be this hard.
You might want to ask your vet......
To test your dogs to see if they have Staph/E-coli infections. Our girls were tested (we tried breeding for several heat cycles and no luck) and were positive. Stella was on an antibiotic and we just had our first litter in 2 years. You will have to treat ALL your bullies both male and female but this seems to be what our problem was. Just a suggestion from one who has been frustrated.
Best of luck,
Lisa
That was exactly what my Vet did
and you are dead on about the smell.... I've emailed you about the ovulation timing but I believe that there are several others here on the board who are also interested in what you have to say on this subject. If you don't mind posting it here that would be great. Thanks again...
Pooling blood
Connie,
It's not uncommon for Bulldogs to pool estrus blood due to their anatomy (vagina often slopes "downhill" toward the dog's head).
When preparing for a TCI it can be helpful to stand the bitch up on her hind legs and apply pressure to her lower abdomen. Doing so will often help expel the pooled blood which makes it much easier to complete the TCI successfully.
BTW - be prepared, the odor associated with the previously pooled blood can be quite unpleasant.
Good luck!
Dan Bandy
I would love to hear what you have to say on this, too!
I have a bitch that I've missed twice (once surgical) that I should have been right on timing-wise. She's just showing signs of going into heat again, so now is great timing if you have ideas! She had open pyo on her first heat, so we did a surgical when we bred her the first time hoping to increase the odds of success. The vet said her uterus looked fine, so when the first breeding didn't take we decided to just do a regular AI the second time. We tested for thyroid and she's on the low end of normal, so she's been on thyroid meds for the last 6 months. We've shipped semen previously, but we're going to try using a local dog this time. Each time, she's been on cephalexin for 3-4 weeks from the first signs of heat to prevent another pyo. I'm open to any suggestions!
Lots of blood pooling during TCI....
We usually go with2 days after 5 but that would have been sunday and we wanted to make sure we could cover her for the weekend so we went with Sat, Mon TCI and AI on Wed. Should have had her more than covered and we were dead on for timing as far as the progesterone tests go. I have to believe that there is something else at work here so we are going back to the Vet to check for blocked tubes and do another set of cultures. I do remember the Vet saying that there was alot of blood pooling and she had a heck of a time seeing anything with the scope. Made it real hard to see where we were driving so to say. Has anyone else had experience with this????
we breed 2 days after 5ng ALWAYS results are
2 litters x8 and the lady I work with 1 litter x 5 all via tci

We actually did the TCI early this time mainly
because of the Weekend. Sunday would have been ideal but we did the 1st on Sat just to make sure we had the weekend covered and then again on Monday. We checked the semen both times and it traveled great. I know several members of this board who have used the same stud (shipped) and got nice big beautiful litters. I don't know if they did AI's or TCI but regardless I'm pretty sure the problem s on my end. A local stud would probably be a great idea but at this point I've already paid the stud fee and don't have another Bitch to use him on.
what numbers are you breeding at and shipping
if you are day late its to late, your better to be in a day early.
My experience...
Holly's first litter we shipped, her timing was great she had 2 puppies both in her left horn. (Boy Girl)
2nd litter surgical implant with frozen semen number right per the repo specialist in oregon. 2 puppies in left horn (Girl Girl)
3rd litter fresh semen, breed 4x's. We breed her on Friday we thought was early, Saturday, Monday. I had blood drawn on Tuesday as i wanted to know where she was, she was 14.5 we breed her 1 more time on Thursday. I know we breed on the early side on friday. She went in labor 61 days from the first breeding. I think it depends on the bitch and how things travel down the tubes. this time she had 5 puppies 2 boys 3 girls, 1 of the boys was smaller so i think he took on the later breedings.
If you have missed your girl with shipping, find something LOCAL, some semen doesnt travel well or live as long.
I know some vets say dogs ovulate at 4ng some say 5ng. Some will breed at 5ng and then 2 days later. IMO most the time that is a bit early. However in my case that is about what we did and she had her largest litter.
I have friends who breed the same time and breed early, she was prego with 11 babies. Unfortunatly they lost momma and babies at 58days.
Finding what works for your girl since they dont always follow the rules. I would breed her early if you have been breeding late and use fresh vs extended.
