Zoey has an ulcer on her eye.. what could have caused this?

Just got back from the vet and found that the ulcer is the reason for her right eye swelling over the past couple of days. The benadryl helped the swelling go down, but I could still tell that her eye was bothering her so I didn't want to take any chances.

Our vet gave us antibiotic eyedrops (Gentamicin Sulfate Opthalmic Solution USP) to give her 3 times a day, as well as a pain reliever (Atropine Sulfate Opthalmic Solution USP) to give her once a day.

I'm just curious now as to why/how she got the ulcer. Any thoughts or ideas? Is this something that could repeatedly occur?

Thanks for any input!

I think...

What caused her eye to rupture was the vet messing with her eye so much. Does that make sense? He was prying on it and showing everyone in the clinic her ulcer. He put the first round of meds in her eye himself. I know that he had to thoroughly examine her eye, but maybe he was a little too rough? No, there was no warning sign for her rupture. As soon as we got her home and inside, I noticed her eye was bleeding. It was that fast! A span of 45 min! We immediately got her back to the vet and she had surgery that evening. I don't want to worry you, but I wanted to let you know about our experience. I hope your baby makes a quick recovery and Abbey sends her love.

Wow, pamela

Glad she's doing well, but how scary that must have been! Did you notice any swelling of the eyelid or any other symptoms before it ruptured? I'm hoping we caught it before it got that bad. But now I'm going to be constantly looking in her eye and worrying!

Thanks for the info!

My pug, Abbey

Had an ulcer about a year ago. Hers was caused from her rooting around in the sand and getting it in her eye, causing a scratch.[IMG][linked image][/IMG] I took her to the vet right away when her eye started swelling. The vet gave us the same meds as ya'll. When we came home I noticed that her eye started bleeding so we headed back to the vet. Turns out her eyeball ruptured and she had to have surgery to fix it. She is doing well now. She is not able to see out of that eye but she adapted very quickly. You would not think that something as simple as playing in the sand could potentially cause her to lose her sight in one eye. Abbey is a very sweet girl. She loves her pug brother Max, and her new bully brother ,Maverick very much.

I just hope we've had the right diagnosis and are treating her properly. We'll follow up with the vet next week and hopefully all will be well!!

Thanks for all the help on here!
