What proportion of bulldogs who have palate surgery...

as pups end up having to have it again? Anyone have any idea? Henry had his at 1 year, and I'm wondering if he needs it again. He just turned 3.

Re: What proportion of bulldogs who have palate surgery...

Oscar had his elongated palate and sacculas surgery when he was 8months. He did stop the gagging and spit up of the white foam for a while but it has come back. The panting after very little excercise even in the house got bad at age 1yr and the gagging and white foam came back bad. I took him back to the Vet who said his palate was great but said that he had everted sacculas again and wanted to remove them and suture the gaps as well as remove his voice box. I was very hesitant about removing his voice box but the Dr. explained to me that his sacculas were irritating his voice box pushing them into his airway and irritating them bad so I agreed.

Almost a month after surgery the panting is better, the gagging and spit up of foam is better but not gone. Anyone else have these same issues after surgery???

he is not that noisy, never was.

but still needed it done. He pants constantly with the least bit of play/exercise even in lower temps. Because I had to be extra diligent with him before the "fix" I am probably never going to be anything but overly cautious with him.
My last bully also needed airway done.

noise!

I agree, noise alone isn't a reason for palate surgery. One of my Bulldogs, Charly, could trot for ages, panting and sounding like a steamlocomotive, in temps of 25C, without any problem. A bowl of water and a lay down in the shade, and he was ready for the next walk. He was all white, that really helped and he lived till almost 11 years.

At age 8 he had recurring bronchitis and his trachea was x-rayed. He had a nice trachea and a cure of special AB's and some prednisone cured the bronchitis.

Zorro hardly ever pants, but has really improved from palate surgery.....

one misconception to correcting an elongated palate is

that the dog will become quiet. Elongated soft palate resection should be done to help with breathing. These dos vomit after eating and drinking, have sleep apnea, turn blue from airway obstruction etc..
so IMO the fatc that your boy no longer tursn blue is significant improvement. Otherwise he may have been dead long ago. Noise is ok to an extent. Many Bulldogs make some noise whn excited, during execise, when nervous etc.

mine had scalpel/sutures for palate and saccules

last summer. He was 4 yrs old. Funny, he is not that much better now. The only difference is his tongue does not go blue anymore. He pants his head off with any walk or play so I still have to be very cautious with him at this time of year. I secretly wonder if they took enough, but I am not a vet, so who knows. I was told he had an airway "as wide as a highway" post op. I don`t suppose an airway fix will turn a bully into a border collie he he

I would think the number

Would be fairly high. Morgan had her palate trimmed at 8 months. She is now 4 and her palate is a little longer than I would like but not long enough that it causes her problems.

funny you ask this because

the dogs I am seeing that are comming into rescue have had it done via laser at age 2 and sound HORRIBLE! The dogs who have had is surgical removal with sutures all still sound great!

So I have been wondering if laser is all its cracked up to be when done on the dogs at a younger age .or if laser is good at all.

My vets dont do laser and say they never will. They dont believe you can do as good of a job and get as much..

who knows..
