Hi - we have a 6 month old bulldog, Butler. What amount of food should we be feeding him per day? We feed him Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Venison, usually 3 3/4-4 cups over 2 meals a day. I thought that was plenty (or maybe too much) and then saw the feeding guidelines on the site (not this much detail on the side of the bag):http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/dogformulas/VenDog.html#Feeding. Based on this, it looks like he might need more food. How would you interpret this? What age are they considering as "puppy?" He is probably in the 40s for lbs (not totally sure - haven't had to go to the vet since March and at that time he was 28 lbs. - I guess I need to buy a scale!).
What would y'all suggest?
Thanks,
Jody
RE:
I learned the hard way that the bag and the web site always tell you to overfeed--they want to sell more dog food. Bully is now down to 2-1/2 cups a day--and my vet's instructions are that if I give him any treats, the amount of the treats have to come out of the evening meal.
He has lost some weight. He used to look like Jabba the hut, especially on his back end. There was no curve to his trunk at all. Now the curve is back and his back end looks nice and slim. He's still a big dog (about 75 pounds), but at least he's not gaining any more.
I can't imagine what he would have looked like on six cups a day! The problem is--at least with Bully--that he will eat as much as you give him; and no matter how much you give him, he's still hungry. I think this is common to bulldogs.

That's what I thought...
Thanks so much to all of you. I was a little concerned at first when I read the website, but then thought that seemed ridiculous and would be overfeeding.

lol
6 cups if I put that down my guy would never, ever eat it all (free feeder). He eats less than 3 cups per day.

If he ate 6 he'd be humungous - probably too fat to move! LOL!

wow that is a lot of food...
I have a dog male that is 5.5 months and he eats 3 cups a day, sometimes 3.5 depending on how active he has been. 6 cups is a lot and in my opinion would be over feeding. Bullies are to be lean and muscular not fat and plump...I have never seen a bulldog eat that much. I would try him at 3 cups and increase a 1/4 cup each feeding and see how hungry he is..mine eats 2 times a day and this works great.

They always
tell you way more than needed on the bag. I don't go by that (they want to sell you more!). =)

It depends on how active he is............I'd say 3 cups is probably enough. JMO.
