I need to know what I am looking for in Sarge as his cancer progresses. I know the lymph nodes will go down slightly with the Prednisone, then will swell again. What time frame will this happen in , or is each dog different? Just trying to understand what is happening to Sargie as it gets worse and he nears death. Not trying to be morbid, just a good momma.

My Winston....
passed last November, we too had him on Perdisone. The medication & a minor chemo treatment gave us 4 months from diagnosis. His lymph nodes in the neck did shrink for about 3 months. The last month with him they did begin to slowly grow until his breathing was so labored we knew it was time.
What we did from the moment our Winston was diagnosed is that we made everyday the best day ever with him. Our Winston was taken out for burgers and ice cream he enjoyed it so much. It's so sad to talk about this and my heart is breaking for you. The best advice I can give you is just know when you are keeping your baby around for just you and not for him. Taking my baby in that last day was the hardest thing ever, we stayed with him to the end and to just see him finally sleeping without pain I knew this was for the best.
Stay strong for your baby and remember to enjoy every last minute you have with him.

My friend's Cocker Spaniel just passed from this....
I saw him when they told me that he had 6 months, then the next week he was gone.....he went fast!

They think it spread to his brain because he became very disorented and would just stand and have a blank look on his face.
The end was, from what I was told, uncomfortable....not terribly painful....could not find a position to lay in for very long (as the tumors got bigger) and he was panting very badly. He, of course, stopped eating and that is when they new it was going to be much faster than expected. Just note that Rusty was 16 years old when he died and I am sure his older age played a major factor in his passing much sooner.
I am sorry that this is not that informative....I just felt the need to respond to you because I know how much my friend is hurting

I can't stand thinking about this. I watched Sarge last evening when we went to the barn, and I just cried and cried. He went around the corner of the barn and I looked out and didn't see him, and I knew it would be like that forever very soon. Sarge has been with us for more than half our marriage and it is going to be so strange to not have him here with us.
Thank you for the comfort my friend.

Kathy, I appreciate all the information.
We are not trying treatments, we are just waiting. Sarge is having breathing issues anyway, panting a lot, etc, so the Pred won't make a lot of difference to him. Last night he was restless, but he has been for a couple of weeks now and so that didn't bother me. He is getting an extra helping of whatever I come across in the fridge I think he might like:-) Today it was chicken chunks and a little yogurt for his tummy along with his meds.
I had hoped you could tell me some things about when Oscar had this, so I am glad you posted to me. Thank you Kathy. I know it was so hard when Oscar was sick, but I promise your experience will serve to help others like myself, and that will bring comfort to you I hope. Sad comfort, but comfort.

Thank you Patty.
We are not doing any treatments. My vet doesn't think it will prolong anything but the pain, and I can't do that. So we wait. We will be spending an awful lot of time with Sarge during this time and loving him to the last second. He will know for sure we cared for him to the best of our ability.

Ames - I'm so sorry to hear of this..
No experience, but you guys are in my thoughts and prayers. I know Sarge has had a wonderful life with you, and he'll have a quiet and peaceful passing to the Bridge.

Amy..I'm sure each dog responds differently, but my experience
was that chemo didn't bother him much, but unfortunately, didn't help either. The lymph nodes in his neck didn't shrink..although the leg ones did. Since they were in Mac's neck..he started getting tired more..and at night his breathing became more labored and he couldn't find a comfortable sleeping position. Knowing that bullies can sleep anywhere - that was huge red flag for his daddy and me...
We gathered our little family for a pizza party/ slumber party for what we knew would be his last night with us....(oh boy, here come the tears again)and just loved on him, watched movies, stayed up all night with him before going to vets office.....we were all with him, holding him when he passed peacefully over the rainbow bridge.....
I'm so sorry you are going thru this..it's been 21/2 years for me and i can remember every sight/sound in the room that day...
My love and prayers are with you throughout this difficult time

our vet told us when Oscar was diagnosed that they just feel like they have a bad case of the flu. The prednisone AND the lymphoma will cause panting and restless nights. Oscar would sleep all day in my walk in closet and then sit on the bed and pant a lot during the night. I used to sit up with him and feed him ice cubes and rub towels with cool water on him. I'm sure you know also that the pred causes big appetite, lots of drinking and lots of peeing. It's good you give him pepcid with it because it can cause stomach upset. We had Oscar on chemo, but toward the end it got into his lungs and he had trouble breathing. That was when we had to help him on his journey. It's different with different dogs, it will spread to different parts of the body. Our vet told us that without chemo we were looking at 6 weeks to 4 months. With the chemo we got 8 months, 7 of them pretty good. You will know when it's time. I'm so sorry, I wish they could find a cure for this awful disease.
