Doing a neuter young will mean that the dog will not have the strong hormonal urge to mark his territory, and as a side benefit the scrotum (sac) will not be large so when its "empty" it will not be very noticeable. Spaying a female will also avoid the scare of an unwanted pregnancy and of course save your house from the mess that usually goes on for >3 weeks. Its a misnomer that spayed females always get fat...you control the food and the exercise that balances that intake.

and it was so much harder on him. He was sore for a week, poor boy. I felt bad, but we had thought about showing him, so we held off. He was a Lab. This was around 1996 and I don't remember him having pain meds to take at home, he could of definitely used them. With the pups, they don't seem to be in much pain, I think I gave them meds for 1 or 2 days post surgery is all. I just wanted to share our experiences. Best of luck to the pups! Let us know how they do.

and Xack, they were just shy of six months old. All went well with them. They recovered very quickly, too. Rich was about 6 1/2 months and that was fine, too. Our vet likes to fix them around 6 months and he also checks for retained puppy teeth in case he needs to extract any, while they are under for the surgery. Good luck!

I favor 6mos old if dogs are otherwise healthy.
