Should we wake our sleeping 13-week puppy in the middle of the night in order to pee? We all go to bed between 10:30-11:00 after an outside potty trip. Because she's so young, we were told to make sure to take her out in the middle of the night. We've been getting up between 2:30-3:00 to take her out and find her sleeping (she's crated at night). We've been waking her up to prevent any accidents before our 6:00 wake-up and walk but she is usually dead asleep and it takes some time to slowly wake her and get her conscious enough to want to go out. Should we just let her sleep until she naturally wakes up on her own?
peeing pup
I know you are all going to think I'm crazier than a loon - take a number- but because I have a hearing disability and spouse is a shift-worker when we get a new pup we take up the food at 6 p.m. and the water at 8 p.m. and go to bed after a potty walk about 10:30 to 11 - THEN I put the pup in bed with me. Yes, we crate train but I was always afraid that a pup might whine and I wouldn't hear it so we put them in bed with us for the first couple of months. Never, ever had a mess and all would sleep at least 6 or more hours. We swear by it.
If you limit the water a couple hours before bed,
you should be ok for the night. Their metabolism actually slows down during the night, so they are not processing liquid into pee (according to our vet). Rooney goes to sleep for the night at 9:30, I wake him to pee when I go to bed around 11:30, then he wakes me up to go out around 7:30. He has had this same routine since 10 weeks.
Good luck!

We got Boss
at about 6 weeks, so he'd wake us up if he had to pee, every 2 or 3 hours. By about 13 weeks (3 months) he was sleeping through the night. We still take him out right before we go to sleep (he sleeps with us in our bed, under the covers), no problems, sleeps through the night, now 18 months old, potty before bed (1030 or so) then at wake up time (800am or so) then good for the rest of the day, we go to work, he's left in the house not in crate anymore mind you, then potty at 6pm or so. Your baby should be fine with potty before bed, shouldn't need to go again until wake up time......but each baby is different.
Re: Waking to Pee?
We brought our bullies home after they were 8 weeks, so yes i woke them up every two hrs. But by 13 weeks I just took them out prior to me going to bed (10pm - 11pm), & I get up everyday at 5:30am, so I would take them out then. My female, if she really has to go, she barks. But my male, wouldn't make a sound, so until he was trained I moved his feeding to 5:30pm and stopped his water intake earlier at night.
