yesterday. is there anything i can give him for pain? he seems uncomfortable and is very very sensitive to touch etc. (not that i am touching it)....
also, is it normal to have it fill back up? if so, what do you do at that point? i'd hate to have him go through that again, he doesn't do too well with drs. ![]()
thank you for any help. also, i was able to determine what it was from doing a search on here wednesday night, and felt that was what was going on from the posts i read. so when i called thursday morning, i pretty much knew what to talk with them about etc. so BIG THANKS to ALL who take the time to try and help us all.....much much appreciated. ![]()

Hematoma
Was it surgically drained under anesthesia, or did the vet just aspirate and drain it while he awake?

Grady had a hematoma a few years ago and the vet just aspirated and drained it while he was awake. His ear was wrapped with a compression bandage and we were told to keep the bandage on for at least 3 weeks and not to let him rub or scratch at it. I didn't think Grady would bother the bandage, but of course, he had it off within a week and the hematoma started to fill up again.
So, I took him back to the vet for another aspiration and bandage. This time, I used the e-collar on him and kept the bandage on for 3 weeks. He has some scar tissue now in that ear, but otherwise, the ear healed fine and looks mostly normal. If you look at the picture below, you'll see that the ear flap has a slight wrinkle to it, but it's not really noticeable unless you were looking for it.

Re: Vito had a hematoma on ear flap drained & stapled......
A friend of mine just had to have that same thing done with her dog only he developed 2 on the same ear. He is currently wearing one of the cones around the neck to keep him from scratching at the stitches. We asked the dermatologist what causes them and he told us it is a result of head shaking, breaks the small blood vessels. Usually on an allergic dog. If it is filling back up, I would take him back to the vets again. As for pain, I would contact your vet and see what they recommend.

You can give him aspirin
And yes they can fill back up. Morgan had a small one and we treated it with prednisone. It went down in about a week. Good luck and I hope Vito feels better soon.

just remember this drug is an
antiplatelet so it will cause the blood to be thinner. So may help or make things worse if its filling back up.
be careful with aspirin. i know alot of people here give thier bullies aspirin but its really not one of thsoe safe zone OTC drugs like we think it is because of its actions.
i think i would rather of used Rimadyl, Deramaxx or something along that line..
