vet said NO to folic acid / vitamins !!??!!

So I went to vet today to get folic acid / vitamins for Emma, who is going into heat soon and we will be implanting... vet would not give me any... she said if we feed a good food, then we should not be giving Emma extra vitamins / folic acid!

Needless to say, I am very frustrated!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any suggestions for what to order and from where online?
THANKS!

Re: oops, I thought I erased the title above, sorry about that

I guess that was meant for me but I will accept your appology because I am a good person .

I have been breeding for over 20 years ( limited breeding ) and have never given any supplements to my girls and there was never any SB babies . I will not change my protacol because everyone else is . WE as humans are different then canines so why do we compare us to them ? I am not going to tell anyone not to do what they feel is right and to do what I do . I only say what I agree with or not agree .

Maybe we ,as breeders should look into the genetics of the line they are breeding into and not who is the flavor of the month as a stud dog or who is handy for them . I keep on saying we all should talk about what we have had in our line and what we are strong in .

How many breeders have had cleft palates . hair lips and SB puppies . I understand that this is all the same gene. How many breeders tell what puppies they put down at birth because of these problem ? Not a whole lot ! There is more to health issues that we can stop , other then with supplements . That is in the way we breed !!

Just putting in my 2 cents

Now I guess I will get hit again .......LOL

ok so why do they give pregnant women vitamins then

your right, most would not agree with this. Women who become pregnant for the most part eat a balanced diet but still take vitamins to reduce the risk of complications, birth defects and because the fetus is demanding more nutrictional needs then what most women consume.

Simple fix to this post, go buy it at Walmart in the vitamin section!
Give her one a day!
Prevention is the key

It has everything she needs.

Good luck with your breeding.

We are from

Grand Island, Nebraska!

3rd largest City in Nebraksa, and we don't have any good pet stores! They come and go, no one ever makes it... Lincoln is about 2 hours away, I may be making a quick trip to Lincoln soon!

Thanks for asking!

Walmart and drug stores carry folic acid

I give 400 mcg about 2 months before breeding and throughout pregnancy.

LOL

After leaving the vet, i felt same way! I am so frustrated because I don't live in big city, no petco, petsmart etc. We have a walmart and a Tractor Supply, so besides vet, I don't have a whole lot of options on where to purchase. Will have to order online. Would like suggestions on what breeders like to use. Thanks again for any suggestions!

oops, I thought I erased the title above, sorry about that

I know name calling is not nice, I thought I erased it before I posted it.
It was an impulse typing, wish we had a minute after posting to go back and edit..lol.

I do apologize for the name calling part.

your vet is a retard, why not be safer than sorry,

Folic acid cannot hurt her. Does your vet know how many bulldogs are born with spina bifida?
On this board alone off the top of my head I can think of 11, there may be more. Of course folic acid is not a guarantee, it is known to help prevent neural tube defects. I am not a breeder, but when someone breeds dogs and says they agree the dog does not need vitamins or folic acid, just a good food, seems they do not have the puppies best interest at heart. Why not be proactive and give some extra vitamins? Just like a person, a dog needs those extra vitamins, the babies take alot out of you.
I would switch vets, but that's just me.
