very strange - looking for input

Sorry this may be long!!  I have not posted on this site for about two years.

The other day Murphy starting acting a bit strange.  He wasn't making corners well and was gliding into the wall and bumping into things..  I of course brought him immediatly to the Vet.  She checked him over and said that he is acting a bit strange but without tests we can not be sure what is going on.  lets schedule a neurologist and optomologist appointment for this friday.  I brought Murphy home and he was not right..  He head was going back and forth, roaming the house (as if he didn't know where he was) and was once again bumping into walls.  I brought him right back to the vet and he was there for the past two days.  They ran every blood test possible (he has been on predizone for close to 3 years now) and everything came back normal.  At this point we are thinking that is could be a brain tumor.   He was scheduled for an MRI this morning when the vet called and said that Murphy was acting fine and seemed fine and perhaps we should hold off on the MRI.  So I brought him home and he seems fine.. I do still have an MRI scheduled for tomorrow, however, it can be cancelled.  This all just seems so strange. Has anyone seen anything like this?  Should I put him through the MRI even if he is acting fine??

Very Strange

Did they rule out a possible reaction to pred.  What about a stroke.  It would be nice to have an answer to what is going on.

Did the vet. indicate that these symptoms are indicative of a tumor?  Maybe do some research on the web  with his symptoms.

I hope others on this board will see this post and hope they have some input.  Good luck and keep us posted.

He has been on the pred for

He has been on the pred for so long now, that I think we would have seen this reaction long ago.  She said it could have been a stroke - but I am always with him and I would think that I would have noticed.  I have done research and it is all the signs of a brain tumor.. However, he is home now and completely fine.  I forgot to say that he did see both the neugologist and optomologist and they did not see anything wrong in the exam.  What about a reaction to frontline??  I applied it about a week ago.

That is very strange.....

at first, I thought tumor too.....

I assume you have used Frontline in the past and never have had this happen, right?

It is a tough call about the MRI.....I have mixed feelings.  On one hand, I would say hold off and see if it comes back again (he could have had an inner ear infection that was throwing off his equilibrium) but I am so neurotic with my bulldogs that I would make myself crazy thinking that I should have done it.

Either way, I wish you lots of luck and hope there is nothing wrong with you boy!

yes it can be the frontline!

http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/health/petproductseval.html

here is a place to report adverse reactions. one of the most serious reactions is neurological, the main ingredient in frontline is a neurotoxin. it has a cumulative affect, which could expliain why there were no previois reactions. the company won't admit the possibilty that their products can be dangerous, but they certainly are.

Frontline could have caused these symptoms.

What was the time reference to giving him the Frontline and his bahviour changing? I bet you it WAS the Frontline, but would go forward with the MRI to confirm or deny any brain issues going on instead.

I wish Marcello still posted here

his boy Conan (I believe) had a brain tumor.  He could probably tell you what he experienced.  Maybe someone knows how to reach him.........  I hope your boy is fine.

Actually, Conan had

Hydrocephalus.  Remember that video he made at the end?  I cried my eyes out...

I'm so glad he and Big Red found each other.

my opinion

I would not put off the MRI. Many times when a dog acts off it is for a reason. Many times they act off then are normal...then days, weeks, or months later the same thing re-occurs and then it could be to late. Your vet is running tests from least expensive to expensive to rule out all the variables. If it were me since the blood work was negative and there is still no answer I would keep the MRI appointment. I hope eveything is fine.

I agree

It could have been any number of things =- some of which would leave a morphological change visable on MRI.  I would also keep the appointment.

Keep the appointment

If the results are good, then you can rule out one huge worry.

I agree with the others that it could a reaction to Frontline. One other possibility: Could your dog have chewed on a poisonous plant, eaten seeds that dropped from a poisonous plant, or gotten into a bowl of macademia nuts? All those things can cause temporary neurological symptoms.

Good luck, and let us know how the MRI turns out.
