I read some old posts on this subject. Anyone have experience or knowledge regarding urethral prolapse? I have a young male just diagnosed with this. This is a first for me! Please help!
how the heck are ya? It's Sue/Sumo - now Bear. Here is the link to the old Net 54 medical side. You can still access the search feature even though the Net 54 boards are read only now. You should find all the previous posts out there. Hope this helps.
I have heard their is a new surgery where you can freeze the tip of the prolapse and should never have any more problems.. only heard this through a vet who was going to check it out.. sometimes it may only prolapse and it will never bleed.. if you have any questions or concerns you can email me at pinkspears@aol.com hope this helps.
Yes it's been a while. Sometimes I look back and cannot believe how many years have passed since we all started together in the world of Bulldogs. I always could rely on people especially at Bulldogs World to help when needed. And still love you all for your friendship and help. After years of Bulldogs you think you've heard it all and now this!! This little male was supposed to go to his permanent home last week. Can't believe this happened, but if something was going to happen I am glad it did before he left us. I'm still actively into club politics and showing. May have to slow down due to economy. I was hoping there would be some up to date miracle on the urethral prolapse issue. Thanks for posting the link. Going to Atlanta to another vet next week. He is bleeding a lot, worries me even though vet said he would not loose a serious amount of blood. Looks like a lot to me. I am keeping him crated for most of the time to rest. But every time he comes out today bleeding starts. Sue hope you and dogs are well!!!.
I went through this a little over a year ago with my guy. Some people say you can gently massage it back in but that wasnt the case with us. what did your vet say about it? There a few procedures that can fix it and the most common is a tacking procedure where they push the prolapsed tissue back in and suture it in place. This procedure works for alot of people but it can also come back again. There is also the snip procedure which they snip the tissue. Quite honestly as long as he is peeing ok I would just leave it alone. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesnt get any bigger or just watch to make sure there are no issues peeing. Is it bleeding? I had a long conversation with a soft tissue surgeon at Tufts about these and even she said if it is causing no issues it is better left alone. I originally did the tacking but it only held for about 3 weeks. One thing I was told by the surgeon is that it is not an inherited condition but more hormonal where there is a little too much excitement with immature tissue.
Thank you for your responses. I talked with local vet and another vet that I use for Bulldog issues in Atlanta which is over 2 hours away. Local vet knew pretty much nothing, wanted to send him to University of Georgia Vet School, am going to take him to Atlanta on Monday. We live in a very rural area. They both said he would not bleed to death, BUT this is really scary. He has been crated, any little excitement starts the bleeding again and it is a LOT! I have used ice to stop it for the last few times. May try the neosynephrine someone suggested. If anyone has any other info please let me know. I am hoping he will be OK until Monday.

From teh old BDW site. I don't know if you know, but you can go to that medical board still and search for everything that has been posted there. I found a lot of good information about urethral prolapses there. This is one link....
my cooper had/has this. when i was "rolling" it back in, i squirted some neo-synephrine on it. someone on here told me about that. it's normally used for people's noses, but it shrinks tissue i guess. makes sense. anyway, you can try it too, if you want. my vet also said it was worth a try. cooper's hasn't "popped" out for a while now, but i'm careful not ot get him too excited. good luck!
it scared the crap outta me! the next day it was giant & swollen! i've heard it works for some, but it sure didn't for me (or cooper)! i'm glad ot worked for onslow =)

I'm going to tell Tom and Stanley about this
he went through this and knows a lot about the subject. I'll see if he'll post some advice for you. Good Luck!

one more thing you can try

My vet told me the same thing
but instead of neo-synephrine, to use sugar...........weird huh? I never had to use it only had that issue once and it resolved on its own. =)
i tried the sugar
it scared the crap outta me! the next day it was giant & swollen! i've heard it works for some, but it sure didn't for me (or cooper)! i'm glad ot worked for onslow =)
Yikes, no I never had to use it on him
It resolved itself. My vet just told me about it if there's a "next time" and thankfully there wasn't.
